I had this internal debate about 2 weeks ago before heading to the Snake River country on an elk hunt. I finally decided that I would leave the single shot rifles at home and just hunt with the 414 5 shot. We never even saw an elk this year, a first for us, but it still made the hunting more visceral and exciting for me knowing that there was no rifle back-up contigency plan.

Around here it's so many deer now it ain't a big deal to get one, I know a kid that is just a little over 20 and he's killed over 50 deer! I got to using a SA for deer and squirrel hunting and it's put a lot of fun back into hunting. I think ,with the thickets I like to deer hunt in,I can do just about as well with my pistol, and squirrel hunting,if a dog gets one treed,90% of the time with a shotgun ,he's dead, but with a pistol it's a bigger deal to get in on him and get a rest so you can shoot,my guess is more than half will bail and 1/2 of the rest will be missed,so their will be more to tree next time. It's a challenge, that's for sure!

The number of days I can spend deer hunting is limited, therefore I have to carry both rifle and pistol. This way I don't have to "pass" on a deer because of distance.
