Well, I have 200 jacketed bullets on the way. It can't hurt to try it before resorting to abrasives on the nice Colt barrel.
I don't mind experimenting with fire lapping on the Great Western though. I ran my first three cylinders through it using the NECO 220 grit and cleaning thoroughly between cylinders full. Unfortunately, that didn't seem to make any difference in the frame constriction I was feeling, and the leading was terrible. I have a feeling that after the first bullet of each run the lapping compound was just lapping lead where it most needed to be lapping the steel. I was spending a WAY too much time scrubbing and using the brass screens (couldn't find any copper chore boys locally except the really course, crumbly stuff) and it was really aggravating. I couldn't imagine going through the whole series of the treatment, especially if the leading was defeating the whole process irregardless.
Anyhow, I loaded up a series of lapping rounds using softer bullets ahead of 25 grains of FFg and 5 grains of cream of wheat. I know that my black powder loads never lead, but without lube, who knows. In any case, I figure the cream of wheat will keep the bullet from any flame cutting and will scrub the bore behind the bullets, hopefully eliminating any leading so the lapping compound can work properly on the steel as it should. That's my hypothesis at least. If it works out I'll start it's own thread on what I did and the results. Fingers crossed.

My Freedom Arms model 97 .357 leaded rather easily at first. There were some disappointing tool marks on top of the lands. Several hundred jacketed rounds later, it no longer leads, and the bore looks smoother.
I've heard of applying lapping compound to tight fitting cotton patches, but it seems like it would only smooth the top of the lands and maybe take the sharp edges off of them. I can't imagine it would reach the grooves.
