Say you wanted to spend just under $1500 for a 1911 which would you go with. I'm looking at either a higher end Springfield, Kimber, Colt Gold Cup, or Dan Wesson. Familiar with the first three but not DW. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Those are all good choices. I have a full size alloy Kimber and it is very good. The only thing about the Kimber that I don’t like is the firing pin safety. The newest Colts I have seen look very good. The Springers and Dan Wesson I don’t know about. At 1500 dollars your getting close to the price of a Les Baer which is a good option.

Springfield has excellent customer service, and an excellent custom shop.

If you look around carefully you might find a used Les Baer for under 1500. That's what I did and haven't looked back. Also the DW Valor Botail is a fine handling 1911.

Nighthawk also makes a really nice 1911 but you would have to shop around to find one for $1500. Good luck on your quest

I've had excellent results from the many Kimbers & Springfields I have or have had & wouldn't hesitate to buy another. For a nice Les Baer that is just about in the mentioned price range, I don't think you'd have to look long. You could just PM a poor boy named gunzo.

i picked up an all but new les baer monolith from gunbroker on xmas morning for $1295-took delivery on dec. 31-last gun of the year for me, certain.
handle a baer before you buy anything else. this one's a shooter and hasn't fully broken in with over 600 rounds down the tube, but it's getting there. very tight, both in fit and as a shooter.

I'm not a competitor, so I'm happy with my "base" model guns. My favorite non-oldie is my Kimber pre-series Custom Classic Royal. No problems to report, no pesky extra safeties. They seem to be available around $700 and up for clean used examples.
I like some of the fancier guns, but for me the Kimber is "enough" gun.

I have loved all my Baers. They are a lot of gun for the money. I don't buy Kimbers. I like the Springfield RO mentioned also. But, do yourself a favor and at least look at the Baers before you buy. I've sold a couple over the years for about 1200 a piece. One was a nice Stainless Stinger (commander top and officer frame) that I wish I had back! They are all tack drivers and all of mine have been 100% reliable. I've had a Wilson, Yost Bonitz, and a Nighthawk over the years but the Baer is the only one that remains if that says anything....
