Received my .450 Alaskan project from Ben Forkin a couple weeks ago. It's on a mod 71 Winchester that was in poor shape; barrel shot out (6"+ groups @ 100 yds), rusted receiver, wood beat to hell. It had spent a great deal of it's life in a saddle scabbard. I opted for a 22" barrel rather than the standard 24" on a mod 71. It's quicker to target without giving up too much velocity. Barrel is PacNor. I can hold 1.5" @ 100 with a 400 gr. Barnes @ 2100+ FPS. It is unpleasant to shoot from the bench. Photos: .450, .348, .308 Muzzle end of .450 and .348 Rifle

71s are my favorite lever gun. Strong, smooth, and well balanced, they fit me just right. Yours looks great and you can't get much more hard hitting than the old 450 Alaskan. Lee www.singleactions.com

I need to reveal my ignorance. How does the 450 Alaskan compare to the 450 Marlin and does it headspace on the shoulder or the rim? Is the peep sight mounted on the bolt? I would like something similar on my LSI Puma 92 480 Ruger. Your gun is a looker and a shooter too. Be very proud. I have a 450 Marlin 1895M and am considering a lead sled for the bench. What kind of recoil pad is that? I tossed the pad off the Marlin and am installing a Limbsaver. I promised my orthopedic surgeon who rebuilt my shoulders I would take care of his handiwork.

Per the Barnes Manual: The .450 Marlin drives a 400 gr. (Barnes) bullet to 1930 fps. The .450 Alaskan pushes the same bullet to 2100 fps. My load developement yeilded a top velocity of 2140 +- fps with this bullet from my rifle. Doubt any animal I'm likely to shoot would notice the difference; but there is about a 200 fps spread. The .450 Alaskan headspaces on the case shoulder. The "peep" sight is a Lyman receiver sight (I believe a Lyman 67 from memory). The butt pad is an old Winchester rubber pad. It is not a hi-tech gel/foam pad, but is light years better than the steel butt plate that's standard on the mod. 71. Receiver sight:

I envy you your M71. When I lived in Alaska, I ran into another fan of the M71, and he said that he was sure that more than 90% of the M71s in Alaska were .450 Alaskan. There sure a lot of stories about prospectors, and trappers getting out of troubles with one. Looking at the case I got it in my head that you really have to "hold on tight" so I whimped-out when I finally got a chance to convert a 71. Mine is a Browning with the Deccelerator, and a 20" barrel. It sure handles fast...and I'm afraid of NOTHING when I carry it. I barrelled it in .375/348 Improved. It'll send a 300gr Hornady RN out at about 200fps slower that an H&H with a 24" tube. At the range, other shooters move away until I'm through, but a gun like these aren't made to spend a lot of time at the bench. Have fun, Gene

Mavrick your right about the range time I have a 50 alaskan in a 1874 sharps 20 inch bbl. shoots 435gr. @ 1875 and 700gr @ 1000/1300 fps. To shoot 40rds takes 1.5 hrs. and a thermos of coffee to enjoy . as you stated not many others get to close or want to shoot your gun. Smile goes here. Having a boom of a time. nate

I shoot a 400 grain gas checked flat nose bullet @2100 in my 450. I cannot keep that bullet in anything I've shot with it, from praire dogs to moose. Whoever made my 450 was smart guy, the forearm is held on with a band that screws into an integral lump on either side of the barrel.Has full magazine which makes it kinda heavy but holds six rounds plus one. Also have 416/348 Imp that is lots easier to carry and shoots a 350 at 2250. Pretty good killer too.
