Wow... I really have liked the Montado and have drooled over a few samples. Well, I went to a local dealer this afternoon to put some money on a layaway.. Gave him some money and started to look through the gun cases. Spotted a NIB Montado in 45 with a price that looked like 460.00 on it.. asked to have a look.. sure enough.. NIB Montado for 460.00 + tax. I promptly asked to change my layaway gun for this one.. No problem as this dealer is flexible.... Will be shooting this new vaquero tomorrow.. Will go real nicely with my Reeder sixgunner special 45 colt/acp...this is 160.00 or so less than the only other Montado I've seen in person... at Cabelas... I'm pleased.

Other than the hammer and the grooves on the front of the front of the gripframe and the sjort barrel, was there anything else different about the Montado?

In my opinion, the SBH hammer is better than the Montado hammer.
They're basically the same thing, but the Montado has a more oval pad and diagonal-cut checkering. The SBH hammer is a bit wider and has side-to-side curved grooves. Hammer-slipping the SBH variant is dead easy, and the best of any SA with the possible exception of Bisley hammers.

Call me weird but I prefer the standard single action hammer.

Thanks for the great comparison pics, Gunrunner! I have yet to try a standard hammer & a Montado, so I can't say which I would like best. I do like the wide spur on the SBH though, so far.

I like the wide spurs myself, although to me a bisley looks right on a XR/SBH framed gun

THANK YOU for those pics. They're fantastic.
One oddity: I'm not 100% sure, but it appears my SBH hammer (installed 2006 new from Brownells on my NewVaq357) has more "curvature" on the horizontal grooves than seen in this SBH hammer. These pics seem to show lines running straight sideways, while mine have a bit of curve - they bend in towards the shooter in the middle, curving away from the shooter at the ends.
To me, it allows my thumb to slip smoothly from the hammer at the end of the cocking stroke.
The Montado hammer wouldn't feel as nice in this regard.

I slip hammer 1 and 2 hands and the SBH lower hammer works best for me , but the wide pad slow me down . that why I thinned it , plus I like the look better also .

I have always preferred the sbh hammer and install them on most of my ruger sa's. The Montado hammer is basically a sbh with cross checkerging. This gives a very good "purchase" on the hammer as its being cocked.. I like both! I tend to prefer the sherrifs model BM basepins as well and like how Ruger did the Montado's.
