Is it just me or do S&W's prices seem to be through the roof? I just read about their new J frame 327 Federal in American Rifleman. Over a grand retail??? And it isn't that good looking. Maybe I'm just getting old and cheap but that seems way high.

My local shop told me Smith is going to lower their prices after the new year. Just can't see them lowering enough to make a big difference. I held a little J frame 22 mag that was right around 700.00 . Sticker shock!

You guys keep buying the new, improved Smith's. Leaves more of the Old Fashioned pre locks for me:-)

Maybe I'm just getting old and cheap but that seems way high. Through the roof? No. A grand is about $650 in 1990 dollars. That's what 629's were going for then. I would call it comparable. A grand for a J frame, yeah, that is high. My mid 90's Airweight was $350. Of course, that is in 38 Special. S&W still is an American company building a quality American product. That's not cheap. I know it was different ownership back then, but I still haven't purchased a new Smith since the Clinton deal. Probably never will considering these prices.

I think the new owner REALLY did well in putting the kibosh on the Clinton deal with the X frame in 500- we're not only not complying we are introducing the biggest baddest production pistol ever. I was happy, never felt the urge to buy an X frame I like the fact that there is such a thing available. Then the internal lock came along and shortly there after the internal lock failures....and denials and being called turd suckers and more by gun writers for having the discernment to openly state that things like Gold "TR" looks pimpish and the internal locks are a HUGE step backwards...

I got one of those TR Gold turd suckers. I carry it in an onion sack. My good friend JohnK and his lovely wife made me a leather, onion sack inlay, holster.l Shoots better than I do.

Yep, great idea nice gun I love the onion sack but the Gold was a BAD idea all the way around. Tom, being the friend I am I will bring a cold chisel and hammer to CSA and we'll get that gold off that gun onto a chain you can wear around you neck:-)

I've bought one new S&W since 1995 and that was an X-frame 500 (I really wanted to try the round when it came out). Some of it stems from the Clinton era deal, but it's mostly because I prefer older Smiths. I agree though, their current retail is high. -Lee www.singleactions.com

No. A grand is about $650 in 1990 dollars. I'm still making 1990 dollars.

Go to a gun show and buy an older pre lock gun. They are cheaper and better made IMHO. I have bought 3 like new smiths from people at gun shows latly for way less than I would have payed for new guns from a dealer. Mark Out...
