I don't shoot consistenly well enough past 50 yards to take a shot at a game animal. I have seen others take 100 yard shots successfully, but my eyes just aren't good enough anymore. I used to shoot silhouette to 200 yards on the steel rams, but those days are gone. Doug, this is why I started using Ultradots.

Also depends on the "handgun". I feel confident with shot placement out to 50 yards with most of my Rugers (assuming the target is in clear view). My 450 Marlin BFR on the other hand will hold 5 shots on a paper plate at 100 yards. In fact, I've had some measure within 4 inches rested off the bench....open sights. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I made this 308 from a 221 fireball in about 1975 before Remy made the 7BR . I carried it on my dirt bike [ before ATV ] in Ca for hunting and had a 80% kill rate at 300 to 400 yds at coyote with a 4x40 scope . Then I used it for 10 years for pistol silhoette with iron sights .

mtnbkr I think you made the right choice and like others have said are ready for the handgun hunting world. Distance for everyone will be different. In skilled hands, and iron sights 100yards can be achieved. With optics and single shots or specialty pistols that range can be greatly extended. But every situation is different and unto itself.
For me I set up stands for less than my maximum distance. I don't want to be able to see 200 yards if I am only accurate up to 75 yards. So I pick and chose my spots to hunt according to which weapon I am using. Makes it easier to judge and gives me confidence if I can only see as far as I can accurately shoot.

It's interesting how it's worked out for me. Where I hunt was only open to shotgun (and handguns) for as long as anyone can remember. I saw deer every year, nearly every day, but always out of range of even the best slug guns.
So I got interested in single shot pistols. I was now able to take deer out to 300 yard or so without much trouble. I don't think I ever shot one that was farther than 70 yards.
A couple years back they finally opened my area to rifles. Owning countless rifles but never being able to use them, I switched to rifles. Since then I haven't shot one farther away than 50 yards.
Crazy.
