What's recoil like at those levels?

Very manageable, even off the bench. Comparing this load, 450/1488 out of the 7.5" barrel, to my buddies 440/1520 loaded 500S&W with 8" tube. Besides the obvious grip frame styles giving a different feel to recoil, the 45-90 is way less "sharp". Guns are about equal weight wise. I did work up several loads with other powders, Benchmark was a standout, but they were absolutely obnoxious! No chrono on those, but after I shot the 5 different charge weights of 5 each, that was enough, for a few weeks! According to the data I could scrounge up, somewhere near 35,000psi with the top load, could be near 1800 fps . They all shot superb though, just too much. I went quite a bit hotter with the H4198 also, up to 1644 fps, those were still ok to shoot, but no gain in group size so no need for shootin paper. Bottom line, 450/1400-1650, very nice, top end loads, out of the question for me.

Here is my BFR in 500 mag. It is Magnaported, and they cut it to 6" while it was there. It is 1/2" longer than a standard 7 1/2" Ruger. Not nearly as unwieldy or large as one might think. The Hogue grips look good, but, I like the Buffalo Horn grips better. Here is a video, at the range, this past summer with 440 grain Corbon Hardcast bullets, real powerful ammunition. 1650 fps, and 2580 ft/lbs. A butt whoopin on both ends. www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z_5XUbMJEk

Most of these large volume, lower pressure rifle rounds have "big push" recoil. Not the hard snap you get with high pressure rounds like the 454 and 500 S&W. That push quickly turns to fierce recoil when the bullets get really big though (like 700 grain slugs in a 50 Alaskan or 500 Martin BFR). -Lee www.singleactions.com

The cannons are intriguing but are too big for my wallet. And my wrist Thing I'll stick with my 475 Linebaugh.
