I have noticed that Ruger has made some changes since I last purchased one of their revolvers. I see that the safety literature is no longer plastered on the side of the barrel and that the newer model Blackhawks have the black plastic grips instead of the poorly fitted wooden grips. My question is are the blued Blackhawks still fitted with the alloy grip frame? I was thinking of ordering a new 5 1/2" .45 Blackhawk and was wanting to know if they might have possibly switched to steel grip frames and ejector rod housings.

Yes and yes, The grip frame is alloy and you can switch to steel. From what I can tell its the guns with the plastic grips also have the locks. If you switch you will need to get a new hammer strut to replace the one with the lock. You will also need a new main spring base, not sure if thats the right name but its the thing that the main spring sits on in the bottom of the grip. The same spring will work.

IT APPEARS NEW BLUED SIXGUNS ARE COMING THROUGH WITH STEEL X3R GRIP FRAMES WITH THE CHECKERD "RUBBER" GRIPS; STAINLESS GUNS WITH THE OM STYLE GRIP FRAME.

Good to know, maybe the new guns coming with steel gripframes might cause some problems with our friends in the aftermarket?

I bought a Single Six 6 1/2" Fixed Sight and it came with the new plastic grips on a locking frame the same size as the XR3-RED which is larger than the NV and NM Flat Tops. It feels smaller because the panels are much thinner than the wood ones. I changed the Single Six over to a NV/ NM Flat Top grip frame to have a all steel one. Lots of work to the gun frame.

I believe the current blued New Model Blackhawks are being shipped with aluminum XR3-RED grip frames with the locks. Dunno about ejector housings but would guess aluminum.
The 50th Anniv. Blackhawks and the .44 Specials are being shipped with steel XR-3 "Lock" grip frames and steel ejector housings.
Stainless guns are unchanged from previous years, ATTM.
I think.

I have 3 new Ruger Single Actions......
NR-4L Blued Single Six with XR3-RED aluminum grip frame. plastic grips, and a lock
BN-44L Blued Blackhawk in 45 Colt with XR3-RED aluminum grip fram, plastic grips, and a lock
KNR-4-17 Stainless Single Six with XR3-RED grip frame, Rosewood grips, and no lock
FWIW, old non-lock XR3-RED grips will fit the new XR3-RED grip frames with the lock with no issues. I have two sets installed, one on the Single Six and one on the Blackhawk, and had to make absolutely no modifications to make them work.

I have two sets installed, one on the Single Six and one on the Blackhawk, and had to make absolutely no modifications to make them work. That is because the aluminum XR3-RED grip frames with the locks are still .500" in width, wider than the locks. The steel XR3 grip frames with the locks are .437" in width, narrower than the locks.

I wonder if Ruger will ever reintroduce the brass gripframes seeing what factory brass framed guns are going for now
