I've only heard that colt made 4 or 5 prototypes and they might have been SAA's but nothing released to the public. They've auctioned a lot of the factory prototype collection. Those guns look legit to me, based on my limited knowledge of the prototype 44 Mags.

The serial numbers would imply that at least 18 prototypes were made, still a small number not knowing how many are actually in private collections. www.proxibid.com/asp/LotDetail.asp?ahid=1290&aid=18517&lid=5041094&aiid=1#topoflotThe Colt New Frontier .44 Magnum that was sold at auction in March 2010 was an auction "Featuring: The Colt Factory Archives Firearms Collection Part II" and included hundreds of Colt firearms, most of them boxed and some with factory letters. Two Colt New Frontier .44 Magnums were auctioned at that time. The other Colt New Frontier was serial numbered 44MAG17 and sold for $3,500. www.proxibid.com/asp/CatalogPrint.asp?aid=18517J.D. Press

Comparing the position of the locking lugs on the Colts against the Rugers known to be six-shooters, the Colts do indeed appear to be five-shooters.
