I wrote to Hamiliton Bowen Inc. asking if they thought the US Frame Specialists black powder frame was worth the Bowen treatment. They gave me a thoughtful, straight answer, and over the weekend to boot (this is a good company!) I'll share it with you here: "Dear Sir: Thanks for your inquiry. As far as possible, we try to stick with guns we know well. I do not have any experience with the US Frame Specialists receivers. You can run into all kinds of problems with such frames even though they are supposed to be compatible with available parts. My best advice and the way we could do our best work would be to start with a USFA gun. You can usually order these from USFA in-the-white but nicely polished. They can install the Bisley-spur hammer right out of the gate. If you order with a 7 1/2 in. barrel with no sight, you can save a bit more . I would put in a call to Gary Grainger or Peter Rhodes and let them know what you are up to. By the time you round up all the parts you need for your frame and make any repairs, you would be getting close to the price of the USFA gun. These are first-rate guns and let us do our best work. Hope this will help; let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for your interest. Sincerely yours, Hamilton S. Bowen Bowen Classic Arms Corp."
Since I was asking about a Colt SAA clone in this case, they were speaking directly to a Colt SAA clone project.
I have learned a lot and will build out my US Frame Specialists in a standard barrel length using scrounged parts. But I will buy a USFA in-the-white and then use it for Bowen custom build sometime in the future. I hope this is helpful to anybody else planning a mod or custom build.

Another source for this work is Doug Turnbull. My 4" SAA with dovetail front sight, Bisley hammer, scalloped loading gate and recoil shield, and narrowed frame rails is scheduled to be completed at the end of this month. VERY reasonable pricing, and you pay for only what work you want done.
By the way, Turnbull builds his guns with all USFA components, hand fits everything, then adds the (in my opinion) higher end charcoal bluing and one-piece wood grips.

I have researched 4-inch mods and decided to build out my US Frame Specialists frame as a 4-inch .44 special. The frame is threaded for a 3rd gen Colt barrel, so I'm going to build it out with Colt parts. Except for a franken-hammer. I spoke to Gary at USFA because I was interested in their birdshead hammer. Gary said that the USFA hammer is designed for a 1st or 2nd gen Colt frame with a fixed firing pin mounted in the hammer. The 3rd gen Colt hammer has a floating firing pin. He said that in the beginning days of USFA, they cut the head off of a Bisley hammer and welded it to the lower portion of a Colt hammer. So I bought a Uberti Bisley hamer and a 3rd gen Colt hammer from Midway USA. Over Christmas, I'll have my smith do the hammer mod to combine the two hammers. He'll anneal both hammers, layout the cuts and perform the operation. He will also regrind the hammer face to mate with the hammer channel in the frame and reinstall the firing pin. I have a 7 1/2 inch Colt barrel and ejector housing coming from Midway USA too. We will chop and recrown the barrel to 3.75 inches and install a new, custom sight blade. We'll cut down the ejector assembly and install flush to the muzzle. it may not be exactly a Hamilton Bowen Fancy Colt SAA Lightweight, but I am very influenced by this beauty
