Stopped by the local FFL yesterday. This particular FFL has a license to buy, sell, and mfg all sorts of cool stuff that requires a $200 stamp to own. Knowing my love of the 44 mag, he retires to the back room, only to come back with a sweet, little gem. He had taken an H&R single shot rifle in 44 mag and attached a suppressor to it. It has a small scope mounted on top and he loads 300+ grain bullets to subsonic velocities. He then asked if I'd like to try it. Silly question, right? So I grab the gun and some of his handloads and run around back of the building. That thing is awesome! Me releasing the string on my bow is louder than this gun at the shot. All you hear is a muffled "poof", followed by the impact on target. Absolutely cool!! Now the gears are turning overtime in my head. Maybe have one made like this? Maybe one of the lever action Ruger 96/44s. That way you have 4 shots on hand. Maybe even a Super Redhawk. That would be cool. Not sure yet and still trying to decide if I want to take on the hassle of running the BATF tax stamp gauntlet. He uses it around his place to keep the various vermin populations in check. And also to entice innocent, unwitting customers into spending money. Funny how these local pushers operate

You won't get very good suppression on the revolver.
Rifle setups like you are mentioning are very popular. The Ruger bolt action 44s were also used frequently.

You won't get very good suppression on the revolver. Hey Bill, why would that be? Not doubting you, just trying to wrap my head around it all. Never thought of the bolt 44s. Since you gotta keep the loads subsonic, it would only make sense to increase bullet diameter as much as possible. Saw the H&R offers a model in 45 Colt and the 500 S&W Now that would be fun!!

Not Bill, but I can help. Noise will still come out of the barrel-cylinder gap.

Noise will still come out of the barrel-cylinder gap. I agree 100% You have to get all of the gas to go through the suppressor, or you hurt its ability to suppress. Blowback semiautos are hard to suppress because the bolt cycles and the cartridge leaves the chamber while there is still pressure in the barrel. Some of this pressure leaves the ejection port. (Not to mention you have the action cycling) If you want a great deal of info on the quiet stuff, you might look at the quarterbore forums under the 300 whisper section. lots of good info there, and the people are friendly.

The ATF hassles really arent. I couldn't agree more. I've been focusing more on single actions just to avoid the hassles. My wait was one week short of 6 months on a manufacture, and 2 months on a purchase.

bisleyfan41 It's no hassle to get the stamp. Just pay your money, fill out the paperwork and wait for it to to come back. I talked to the class 3 dealer in this area and he said most of the time it comes back with in 90 days. Bill

When you're working out with an MP5 - all you hear, as the shooter, is the bolt working back & forth. If you're on grass & you pick up your cases, one would never know you were there.
