Agree with Ken, the funny thing was when I was holding the gun on idle it felt better with the round butt, but when you revved the engine, for all 3 of us the square butt handled better. With the higher recoiling guns that extra support was there for a reason.

This is my first post so I hope I am doing if correctly. I am getting a FA 97 in 45 colt and either 4.25" or 3.5" barrel. I have medium size hands and am trying to decide on which grips to get. I have shot the 83 in 454 but it had 7.5" plus scope and mag-na-port so an entirely different gun. All input is appreciated. Like a few members already said, hold them both, shoot them both if you can and decide for yourself. I’m a big guy at 6’3” 315 lbs (ok fat guy but big sounds better) with medium hands and I prefer round grip on my 83s and square grip on my 97s. I don’t think I shoot one better than the other. I have round and square grip frames on both 83s and 97s from barrel lengths 3.5 inch to 6 inches. My strongest stance is against round grip on 3.5 inch barrel, have. 97 in 44 special with octagon barrel, makes my hand feel huge like the the gun is too small. Have round grip on 500 WE and like it a lot. Sorry a lot of writing with no concrete answer, either way FA makes a fine gun.

I have a rounded grip frame 5.5" 44spl on my 97.. and I do wish I'da gone with the regular square one. Rounded styles are hard to control and maintain your grip shot to shot under any degree of recoil. I find I can shoot more consistent smaller groups when gripping the regular squared style.

Felt incredible in the hand but I sure struggled downrange with it. Now I have the 5 and 1/2 in 97 and 45 Colt with the standard grip and I am able to shoot dimes. Funny thing is on my 475 and 454 FAs both 4 and 1/4 in, the round butt shoots incredibly for me and feels very comfortable. I do notice that my knuckle on the heavy boomers gets wrapped more so than my 7 and 1/2-in 454 with the standard grip

I think the FA83 is perfect square, and I only have 2, 97’s, but with the small grip, the square butt is barely enough, I couldn’t imagine shooting a recoiling 97 with round butt, just not enough purchase in it.

They feel great, as long as I'm not actually shooting them. Always assumed it would apply with others.

While I think the m97 is both a great concept and design , I also know it ain’t really my cup of tea. Zero round but experience with one but have fired off a few square butts belongin* to friends. Scaled down grip isn’t my thing, although I like the basic concept. Square butt works extremely well for me regardless Of barrel length on the m83 but will admit I think my u fired(by me anyway) m83 Packer with short 3” tube and stag rips would Look better cosmetically with a round butt

I only have one square butt 83. I had always wanted a round butt on a model 29 Smith & Wesson until I got one. I hated it. I had to put round butt to square butt grips on it to keep it. It is a classic DX model so I'm keepin it. But wish it was a square butt.

I actually prefer all of my S&W’s regardless of frame size, caliber or barrel length to be roundbutts, but it’s never fit my paws or my fancy to have roundbutts on any of my SA. 99.99% of birds head grips on single actions may feel good to me but always fail in either the recoil or consistentancy of accuracy departments

As has been said already - it's specific to each person. I own few round butts. However these two literally fall into place in my hand. Plus in a cross draw holster they are just more out of the way. Large frame Freedom Arms 83 and Blackhawk Bisley square butts are perfect - to me.
