Sweet dreams and good luck fellow Texans. I don’t really get excited until December rolls around, the Rut starts in S. Texas about mid December and in my hunting area it’s going strong on new years which is when I spend the bulk of my time actually hunting. The Hill country hunters and central Texas hunters get to enjoy the rut a bit earlier.

I AM AT MY Punta del Monte HUNTING LEASE BUT PLAN ON GOING HOME EARLY TOMORROW MORNING, TEMPERATURES STILL IN THE 90's AND WE CAN'T SHOOT A TROPHY BUCK UNTIL CHRISTMAS (RANCH OWNER RULE).

Luck to y'all ! Here in far N.E. Ohio, rut peeks 2nd week of Nov.. Got a spindly 8pt running a set of scrapes across the river bank below the house. He trying to open another on my path to the burn barrel. Drought going on and ground hard. His scratching of dirt kinda sad-like ! I wish him luck but his competition is about 75lbs bigger.

Southeast Texas here, NW of houston , bout an hour. Rut is going here, saw a decent buck chasing a doe in the open pasture yesterday, hope he comes by in the morning, will direct him to the freezer.😁

Our blacktail season wrapped up today. The ruts started but the property I hunt was a deer desert! Not sure if if is the restoration work of returning parts to an oak Savannah, more folks walking the trails or the best and big. St that have moved in. Regardless, hours in tree stands, sneaking down trails in the rain and literally all I saw was one skinny die and a yearly. I’ve taken bucks there the last several years but this year was a bust. Head out for elk in a few weeks so hopefully things will be different in the eastern part of the state.
A little trepidation about the elk hunt in that this will be the first time I’ve hunted with someone other than a few afternoons with my kids. Basically the last 30+ years since my dad died has been solo hunting.

Still stuck working on the road. Gun season for my part of NC starts Thanksgiving week. Hopefully I can get home and off that week. Of course I haven't even been able to start on the damage around my property yet.

The rut craziness has started. Two small one streetlight towns to the south of me, yesterday a deer jumped thru the window of the library and the "rescue" was ongoing last I heard. I saw deer here, off/on all day.

Opening weekend in central Texas was hot and windy all weekend. However, I was surprised at the last minute by a visit to the lease from my youngest daughter. We had a great weekend together out there and it brought back so many memories of when my girls were little and essentially raised on this ranch. Hunted hard all weekend despite the unfavorable conditions, and Sunday morning this old bruiser showed up. Nine pointer that weighed 174 lbs. For reference, prior to this year the largest buck we'd taken on this ranch weighed about 145 lbs. So needless to say, nutrition was on point this year. Anyway, one shot from her .223 and about a 30 yard trailing job was all that was needed.   |
