Sitting here in the blind during early antlerless season with my 4 5/8” SBH that I have resolved to finally shoot something with this year. I’ve taken deer with longer barreled guns in the past but actually shoot the SBH as well as my previous 6” 629. I seem to gravitate to the 4”ish size with five in the safe.
Out of curiosity where do you gents put the 4 5/8” guns in your mental file cabinet? Are they hunting guns? Packing pistols? Bear / poker table guns?
I’m bored and the deer aren’t moving.

I carry a revolver every day on my place. If it is not a 4” S&W it will most likely be a 4 5/8” Ruger or 4 3/4” Colt. If I kept a record I would probably find the 4 5/8” Ruger OM 45 Colt gets the call more than all of the others combined.
As to question of what role they fill, for me it would be all of them, except I don’t play poker 😀

Agree with big muddy, a carry shorties more than anything 4 5/8 to 3, they get used for 90% of my shooting, hunting, etc. worn on the belt the 5.5” guns are more noticeable at days end. The only one longer than 4 5/8 that gets much use is a 5” gun and it’s worn in a chest rig all the time.
i do play poker but it’s only with family, so knives only allowed at the table!!

I think a 3 3/4-4 5/8 barrel inch Ruger Blackhawk/Vaquero in .45 Colt is the all around “Perfect Packin Pistol”. The 5 1/2-7 1/2 barrel is my choice for hunting. I would use the 4 5/8 for everything if it was all I had available though.

My 4 5/8 .45 Colt has more miles and deer hair on it than all my other revolvers combined.

My favorite barrel length, packin', huntin' or just shootin'....
I believe Dick's last deer was with a 4 5/8" Ruger BH at 88 yards...what else does one need.

Most of my dedicated hunting guns are 6-1/2 to 7-1/2". But I carry regularly a 4" Service Six or a 4-5/8" Blackhawk 45. They get used on targets of opportunity often and do sometimes see pure hunting duties. Both work fine with the close up shots of our Southern woods.

Given the right circumstances, under 40 yards, deer in a proper position to shoot, etc. I'd take the shot on one of our SC whitetails with my 1956 flattop 357 Blackhawk. No doubt.

One of my absolute favorite revolvers is a Stainless 4 5/8" Blackhawk in 45Colt. It's fairly light, easy to pack, and accurate enough to pop the heads off of snakes. I mostly shoot 275gn cast out of it now, but have shot up to 405s in it. My eyes are starting to get a little old, so I put a red dot on it. Still not sure if I like it that way or not?

A smaller mount and smaller red dot would make more pleasing I’d bet.

My eyes are starting to get a little old, so I put a red dot on it. Still not sure if I like it that way or not? I always feel like I’m about to launch a torpedo at an Allied Convoy when I shoot an optic on a revolver, but as I coast past 65 I can foresee an impending need. That SIG Romeo 5 sight works way better than the price tag would suggest. I’d really be interested in one of the Holosun SCS Carry sights direct mounted to the top of the frame. Enclosed, solar charged power source and small enough to not change the feel of the revolver. holosun.com/products/reflex-sight/scs/scs-carry.html

My favorite size for single actions and I have more 4 1/2” double action guns than other barrel lengths
