Ok for a second thread I hope you’ll indulge me a little bragging on my number one (and only) son. Three years ago he left home and a pretty decent paying job running heavy equipment to chase his dream of catering to fellas who’d never laid eyes on an elk and guide them to success. To say he is busy would be an understatement. He’s usually booked solid for three months from the en of August through November. His younger sister(he has three) got married about three weeks ago and he’d promised her he would be there no matter what. He had just enough time between clients to get up early, drive to southern Idaho, arrive fifteen minutes before the ceremony started and was back on the road three hours later to meet incoming clients. Anyway I digress…. So when he had a few days between archery season and rifle, he and a couple buddies headed to Orofino to hunt whitetails. He had hunted there last year and managed a spike buck for the freezer. I asked him if he had standards this year and he told me “we’ll see”.
While he is hunting for himself or guiding he usually keeps me up to date on the days events. They had been there a couple days and after his buddy had shot a 130’s class buck, he kind of fell off the radar. I called, texted, sent smoke signals to no avail. Then, my phone goes off with a text from Dylan. HOLY SMOKES!!! What have you done boy? Good job D!!
He soon called with the story. It seems they had been watching quite a few bucks over the days but nothing that got him real excited. He could come back in November and hunt again so I guess he was being picky. They were headed back to camp one night and a deer crossed the road in front of them. It was quite dark at the time and just got a glimpse of him in the headlights. Well he was definitely worth checking on so the next morning at grey light, they had located a group of bucks, feeding in a draw. Dylans friend was spotting and told him he needed to shoot the one on the right. A quick range, a little added dope to the scope followed by a bang flop. Dylan said that he was not really paying attention to the antlers at the time, just concentrating on making a good shot. When they walked up to him this is what they found. Not too shabby for an Idaho whitetail. Guess he’s got me convinced to go with him next year.
