Can anyone measure a 500 jrh loaded round with a .501 cast bullet?
Would be in a 500 jrh case. I need the measurement in the middle of the bullet . Thanks .

I use a custom Lee collet crimp die. Size .502". Measures .529" in the middle of the bullet shank in the case with JRH brass and .530" in trimmed Starline 500SW brass.
Chambers just fine in my bfr

Hello Rooterpig, Reading between the lines on your recent posts you have gathered brass, dies, and projectiles while you search for a 500JRH revolver that suits you. I'm guessing you have assembled a test round and want to see if it is dimensionally acceptable, and if it will chamber. If I'm reading this wrong, please clear things up for us. In direct answer to your question, I checked rounds with three different commercially cast projectiles and two headstamps (Starline, Hornady, and FC all cut from 500S&W brass). All measured 0.527" OD within the tolerance of my calipers. This was about mid depth of the seated bullet, and approximately 1/4" from the crimp as you asked. Not what you asked for, but while the calipers and brass were at hand I measured three pieces of brass fired in a JRH cylinder, each measuring 0.530" at the same location. Lots of things can stack into the tolerances here, but if you just want to know if your test round will fit the cylinder, this should give you a ballpark number. Good luck in your hunt. I started looking for a 5.5" BFR a few weeks ago, about the time you began posting 500 JRH questions. By sheer luck I stumbled on to a 5.5" BFR close by and have had it in my hands for only a couple of days. I'm about the same point as you in learning about this round, but I am pleased so far with the round and the revolver. Best regards, Randy |

The 500 JRH has been a fun round to me. The only real mark against it is it's limited to around 440gr bullets. True most people will never hunt game that requires a heavier bullet.
I use mine with the MP 502-385hp bullet so far. I also have a 440gr NOE mold to try when I get around to it. Either will handle anything on this continent. I've only put a hundred rounds through it so far. Been working out of town and longer hours since the hurricane destroyed so much of the mountains here in NC.

You guys are wonderful . I've located a pistol , post office has lost the money orders. And yes im gathering all I need . And yes made a dummy round with the big noe bullet . 470 grains with paint and a gas check .
I'm at .530 with a .5025 bullet . Hoping that bullet shoots .

What does it measure at the base of the bullet?
I ordered a 500gn bullet mold around 10 years ago from Accurate. Lubed and sized to .501", it would not fit the chamber of my BFR in either JRH brass or cut down S&W brass. It was just too long and extended into the case far enough to where the walls of the case started getting thicker.
Lee reamed out some cases to use a heavy bullet. Don't remember what weight he went with.
I hope your 470 grain bullet will fit.
How long is the bullet, and how long is the nose on it?

If you sent the MO certified letter I can say from bad experience it takes a LONG time to arrive and they do not likely scan it while in transit. If you put a MO in a small box instead it will be scanned at every stop. |
