That was from the Heyday of Contenders.
When Herrett and Ugalde were in the game. To some extent, Elgin Gates.
Then came J.D.Jones and the tide turned to Hand Cannons.

Wow, we're going back a long way Stan. Shot my very first match on New Years Eve in Filmore, Utah in 1976 in a lot of snow using an 8 3/8" 357 S&W & shooting single shot with 180 gr Sierra's. It was legal then. A few months later I put on the first match in Idaho & later that summer I sent a TCframe to Vern Juenke to be tricked out for my 30 Herrett barrel. Once you did this it was only good for that barrel. At least that's the way I remember his frames. The early frames had one piece bolts & had a reputation for vertical stringing. Then came the split bolts. Before I even got the frame back from Nevada my buddy Frank Hough had talked me out of it & in his 3rd match he shot a 39 in production class, tying a world record. And the race was on. Soon after Skip Talbot of Fallon, Nevada shot the first 40X40, perfect score. My IHMSA # was 2046. Skip Talbot built me 2 unlimited guns over the years, a 6.5 Ugalde & a 7 MM Talbot.

Old guns...Old guys. Joined IHMSA early on and upgraded to life for 3304L. Never were any IHMSA matches anywhere close. Had to settle for NRA Hunters Pistol. Standing 100yards/meters, 1/2 size targets, and limited to straight wall pistol cases. Shot my first match and made A class with my issued service 1911 45. Bought a 357 TC and went to AAA the next weekend. Rules read that two matches back to back and BOOM you were reclassified. One club ran a morning match another ran an evening match. Won both with a AAA score.

Interested old IHMSA member asked for more pictures of the 300 VJR. Thought I'd share them here. FWIW in a couple you can see the mark on the grip when it looks to have been dropped. I'm betting that drop fractured the rear sight too.
