Want to build an always with me hunting rifle. Wants/needs= short-31 to 33 inches oal with a 16 inch barrel, 300-350 yard useful range, will not shoot at game over 350 yards- my max. Scope and iron sights. Don't really want a bolt gun. Able to take any game animals on the north American continent minus the Big bears.I am leaning towards a custom Ruger #1 in 308, but I am asking a set of people I respect that have a good amount of experience/practical knowledge - I am in my 70's and have hunted deer, elk pronghorn, hogs, ect - the smaller big game. I am just wanting my 1st custom but practical hunting rifle, my tastes are not for a large bulky gun, more of a walking around gun.Would like y'alls input.

Ruger #1RSI in 338 Fed or 350 Rem mag. Will handle the lower 48 with ease. But I would want the 18-20 inch barrel on it myself. Depending on the length of pull you need, it's still close to your want.

I’d be comfortable with a 260rem, 7-08, or 308 inside 300 for everything up to moose. I’d include a 30-06 and it’s offspring 338-06 and 35Whelen or even the old world middle size rounds 6.5x55 and 7x57 if “action length” isnt a concern like on a single shot. You could get away with a longer barrel using a single shot as well. A 16” barrel effectively gets you 12-13 inches of actual rifled surface which ain’t much.

338 fed would be a great one. The 35Whelen would as well but with such a support barrel, I don’t know you’d see any advantage to go to the long action rounds honestly. 284 Winchester would be another good one. My 15” XP in 284 turns out some impressive numbers.

I think these folks might make what you’re looking for. www.rjrenner.com/ruger-no.1---no.3.htmlAlaska Arms quick detach rings allow for use of irons without losing zero. Alternatively, swing mounts allow for irons and back. The reality is you can get an older Blaser combination rifle with a scope in claw mounts for less than a custom Ruger.

TC Encore and MGM or Bullberry barrels in your choice of calibers. An Encore with a 23" barrel is equal in size to Winchester m94. i have in 23" MGM barrels in 20 Vartarg, 444 Marlin and 500 Linebaugh. i used to have a 15", 16 1/4" and 23" MGM barrels in 6.5 Creedmoor and a 27" MGM barrel in 22-250AI.
i have a 1973 Ruger #1 in 270 Winchester that shoots awesomely.

When I had my custom hunting rifle built I went with a bolt action that was fully blueprinted and converted to single shot with a match barrel and synthetic stock in 7mm-0&. Deer, elk, antelope to varmints, it does if all and us like a wand. Leupold 2-7 is the glass.

Not like they’re Heym marked No 1s 16 inches with iron sights is a Contender/Encore proposition or a new barrel on a No 1, the No 1 being the pricier way to go. Another alternative is any of the bolt action pistols meant to be used with a pistol brace and suppressor. A Remington 660 would get a person close. Cruising gunbroker for customs that’ll get you close then making final adjustments would be most economical.

Earl, what kind of scope are you leaning towards? 1x8 used one on a 243 a few years back and it works for me without being to bulky.

Handled a 7x57 RSI and it handled very smooth, also one in 257 Roberts. Still would like a little more compact, maybe a barrel bob and wood reshape to slim it down.

I'm putting Renner up there with Gemini for "what all am I getting for that price again?" I take back the suggestion.
