I just could not afford to "buy then both" I really wanted to buy a 4 3/4 Colt new frontier 22lr 22 mag. That i saw at the gun show for 750.00. What a classy little rimfire that is. It had a little bluing rubbed off the muzzle, but it was cool. I picked a 1971 detective special .38 instead. I could not part with the cash for both at this time. And that little 38 will be a very frequent companion. But I certainly have a new itch to scratch in about 5 months when my mortgage is paid off. Can anyone tell me how good the new frontier 22 is compared to a new model SS6? Thanks tj !

Both the Colt and Ruger suffer from the same .22 Magnum bore size that results in only mediocre accuracy with Long Rifle ammo.
Two best friends both have Colts...one only had the LR cylinder and accuracy was just fair. The other uses only the Magnum cylinder and it is a laser. Both were the New Frontier style with adjustable sights.
Bought a 2.5" 1968 Diamondback a few years ago...basically a gussied up DS...just a great little gun. If you look in the old Shooter's Bibles of that era it says the DS is rated for "HIGH SPEED" .38 Special rounds as in .38-44 rounds. I've run lots of them through my DB with no ill effects. The 158 +P rounds from Lost River would be a good walkin' in the woods (or hoodz) load..

Thanks Bob. I had a snub Diamondback years ago. Great gun. A 4 inch too. I can imagine why Colt doesn't call there new 22 a Diamonback. Hell they could just put a Rib barrel on there little cobra and call it one as well. ...tj

First let me say, I love Colt SA’s. A few years ago I bought a LNIB NF 22/22mag. I was thrilled to own the gun and it shocked the owner of the gun shop when I told him I was going to shoot it. The gun shot pretty well with 22 LR and I never tried the magnum cylinder. I didn’t like the fact that it shot far to the left and I had the rear sight adjusted to the right about as far as it would go to hit POA. Probably a slight barrel turn would’ve improved that issue.
You asked about comparing it to a Ruger, and that’s basically why I didn’t keep the Colt. When looking at the hand and the cylinder ratchet they looked “tiny” compared to my Ruger Single Sixes. I was thrilled with the Colt name but I just couldn’t see it holding up like my Rugers. I cleaned it up, took it to a gun show, and traded straight over for a “no dash” S&W M17. The Smith was a grail gun for me and I have never regretted that trade.
Colts are cool but in my opinion the Ruger is the better gun for a SA 22.

Dan thanks for the great reply. I have a K-22 Masterpiece.Shot it yesterday. Hard gun to beat. The Detective Special is a good shooter too. I had to find the right place on the trigger for my finger, but it will do what I had in mind for it...tj
