While I was in my LGS picking up the Remington 788 I noticed they had a Marlin 39 (not sure of version) with pistol grip stock and a Marlin variable scope with a post reticle mounted sitting on a shelf behind the counter. It looks to be in great shape. It is a consignment gun and is marked at $499 and they had it off the rack waiting for the owner to call back about an offer someone made. They don’t think it will be accepted but they wouldn’t tell me what the offer was (fair enough) and they will call me if he doesn’t accept it. I figure I would offer $450 and be happy.

Important contributors to my protein intake during college, a Smith & Wesson K-22 and a Marlin Model 39 Mountie (split receiver takedown, 20” barrel). The Mountie fed .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle, although my interest----for both guns----was in Long Rifle only. The Mountie has a walnut straight grip stock & forend, uncheckered. Takedown is via a knurled thumbscrew on the receiver. I put a Williams Foolproof aperture in the rear, with a white bead up front. The K-22 dates to the 1950’s, probably my Mountie, also. A schoolmate in high school hunted with the Model 39’s predecessor, a Model 1892, with as I recall a slim 26” octagon barrel and crescent butt plate. He had no rear sight, so he sighted down the top flat on the barrel, with a little bitty front sight. He did very well on gray squirrels. David Bradshaw

Great guns! I have 2 of the rare carbine models, one of which was made in my birth year. Zeus has another birth year gun he’s going to give me!

Great guns. I have 3, the first i bought with paper route money when I was a kid. The coolest is the TD model with the 16" barrel and straight stock. The last one is an old one with a case colored receiver that was a gift from a friend. My son has a Mountie. Too bad they are no longer mde.

It would need to be pretty rough to not be worth more than $499 around here.

If you have a use for or just appreciate a fine .22 then you need a Model 39, or two. Period. I believe the prices go up every day on them and that asking price does not seem bad. Check to verify the scope mount is factory drilled to the top of the receiver. Early ones were not D&T and some were scoped by drilling and mounting to the barrel. And that drops resale into the dirt.

If it's in decent shape, I would consider $450-500 a decent price. Great guns.

My dad has a Mountie that he’s had since the 60’s, I’ve always liked it and hope some day to own it. In the mean time I found one a local judge had on his table at a gun show and bought it for 375.00, this was in the early 90’s. No idea of vintage but it’s a shooter set up just like Bradshaw’s, I just wish I had more use for 22’s.

$500 is cheap now days. I sold my 39 collection because the prices got so high a few years ago. Keep your eyes out for the 39 Carbine and 39D. My favorites.

Always wanted a 39. may just be a rumor but I heard Marlin plans on bringing them back. but it would be a couple years before they could.

A 39 caught my eye about 20 years ago. Seriously interested, I looked up the serial number and thought it was a late 60s gun. In very nice shape for a 60s gun too. When I was working the deal, I remarked to the salesman that it looked to be a late 60s gun. He quickly pointed out the serial number prefix. Turned out it was made in '52, the same year I was! Pre micro groove too! It lives with me.
