I will be having Jack R Huntington build me a 500 JRH for carry/bear defence, etc, 4 7/8 inch barrel, and we discussed using a round bull barrel. However, does anyone make large caliber stainless steel octagon barrels that will fit a Ruger stainless Super Blackhawk? I will acquire a stainless Ruger SBH and Jack H will be modifying the grip frame for custom grips, building both a new cylinder, and making a bull barrel unless I can get a stainless octagon barrel somewhere. There was a guy on this forum who said he had a Krieger octagon on a custom revolver, and I think he said it was stainless; however, when I called Krieger, they said they are not currently doing anything like that and to expect it to take a year from anyone who does. Well, I'd like to see if I can find such a barrel and get it to Jack Huntington in a more timely fashion than a year. There has got to be some folks on here who know where I should look to find one. Thanks. Jeff

Why not have Jack make the octagon barrel? Unless getting a stainless barrel blank is a problem?

I'm sure that reference was to an octagon barrel built from a Krieger Blank.
Jack offers this option and does a great job on them.
Sounds like a great build...

I can't recall any of the major barrel makers offering stainless octagonal. I'm sure Jack Huntington does them the same way dad and I do. Order a 1.25" straight blank and stand in front of a mill for a few hours. They're a lot of work. Keep us posted on the project. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

An octagon barrel on a SA Revolver is just sexy. Here’s an example of one of Huntingtons beauties.

I don’t know where Gary Reeder gets his, but a call to him might be fruitful. 480R 454C These were both made as 6.5” round barrels , correctly caliber marked & w/ SUPER Blackhawk. Now sport 5.5” Octagon Barrels w/ Freedom Arms style front sight base & GD blade. Your build sounds like a Winner

I know Jack told me he no longer outsources anything, so either have a blank made for yourself and send it to him or get him to make the octagon barrel. I know he does the work, so just keep everything done in house and avoid issues.

Thanks. Jeff If you are having a revolver built by Jack, Then stick with Jack. He will build you the perfect Octoganal Barrel as you can see from hundreds of pics of his work. I cant speak for anyone else but i hate trying to make someone elses finished Barrel fit my own vision. That is always up to the Craftsman and Any of the heavy hitters Like Jack Huntington will build you what you yourself, invision for this project! Unless of course he sees a Safety issue or can talk you into something better that he has come up with. And as the history of JHs work has shown, improvements are a constant. All of us in the custom Handgun Field strive for an easier or more effecient way to get from point a to b without comprimising Quality. Trying to fit others finished Barrels is time consuming and sometimes unfruitfull. I have received barrels that where made by men like John Gallagher and they were still made proud in the areas that you needed it to be for a perfect fit. He knew exactly what he was doing because he had done it. The barrel makers dont know what you need unless you specify and that will take time in a high production shop like Kreiger or even Green Mountain. Let jack make it, It will Come out Perfect. R

Right, I will get Jack to do it. I didn't know if he did octagon barrels or not. We talked about bull barrel round barrels, but no other type. So I will ask him about the octagon barrels, and I am looking for the heaviest barrel type he can make, whether octagon or round bull barrel. The barrels is only going to be 4 7/8 inch long, so I'd like as much weight as I can get in it while still looking right on the gun.

Jack built a Colt Anaconda barrelled blackhawk for me. He likes the odd projects. Talking to Jack about his work is rather different than the other smiths Ive worked with. Im not sure, but maybe he was considering price. A round barrel might run $800, but octagon maybe 1200+. I say, tell him what you want, send the gun and wait. Mine took nearly 2 years.
