Well, over the decades,,, I've slowly added to my meager S&W revolver handguns with models I preferred to own. Most of my desires were in the N frame size. The last one I wanted was a M57 in 6". The ones I found were either too expensive (in my opinion) or were terribly abused. Or both. I wanted older ones,, as most of my S&W's are -1's to -3's.
Well, last weekend,, I was going to a town for dinner at a VERY good restaurant. We had reservations,, and we enjoy going there 3-6 times a year. Doing a bit of reloading work for my DIL and her gun, a .300 Blackout,, caused me to remember wanting one of the Garmin Chronographs again. My wonderful best half,, Miss Penny,, had wanted to get me one for Christmas but they were not in stock where she tried. So,, she was planning on my upcoming birthday. (Well, in a few months.) She calmly asked if we could get one at Cabelas, which was about 10 minutes from the restaurant, she'd get my B-Day present early.
Off we went to Cabelas,, in plenty of time to make dinner. or so we thought.
Now we had tried checking the store inventory,,and were not 100% sure they would have the Chrono. But we were going to try. Once there,, yep,, ONE in stock. She politely bought it for me, and said; "Happy EARLY Birthday."
Love that lady!
It took so little time,, that of course,, I had to wander into the gun library. Lo & behold,, not one,, but (2) S&W M-57's. One in 8-3/8" & one in 6". Be still my heart. The gun was a M57-1. Pitter-patter, pitter-patter. Looking at the price tag,, I was actually surprised at the fair price they had it listed for. Much better than the ones I had been seeing. The salesguy told me that a local collector had 18 of the M57's, and was divesting himself of a few. Now,, this one has a few minor cosmetic flaws,, but the bore, the throat, the chambers all look as if it was a safe queen over a shooter variety. As I noted the minor blueing loss spots,, and all, as well as discussing the Veterans discount,, the guy said in honor of the upcoming Memorial Day,, they were running a 10% off for Vets on mondays. I said; "Well, it's monday somewhere in the world!" He chuckled,, and said; "Let me see what I can do."
He came back with his manager,, and we got to seriously discussing me buying it. She & I discussed the fact that it'd have to be shipped to my NC FFL.
She said the best they could do was the 10% discount for me,, then adding tax & the $35 shipping fee.
I called my FFL,, AND he said he'd immediately email a copy of his FFL.
Time was getting shorter for our dinner reservation.
They went into the back to do whatever they needed paperwork wise,, and Miss Penny was getting anxious,, and a bit worried about dinner.
Then they came back out saying; "We can't ship to this FFL,, as his home address & his FFL address are the same." WHAT THE HECK??"
Now Miss Penny was visibly upset,, and I wasn't very calm either. The discussion got a bit strained.
But I was able to provide them with a different FFL & business I can use.
To calm us down a bit,, they reduced the cost to 15% off and waived the shipping fee.
This happened on Saturday,, and my gun arrived at the FFL yesterday. And the cost was definitely better than what I'd been seeing in all other places.
So,, after quietly looking for several years,, a M57 S&W .41 magnum has moved in here. I'll be shooting it in the next few days,, to see how it does.
We made our dinner reservations with 8 minutes to spare.
Oh,,and the new Chrono,, I used it Sunday. I like it too!
