This old December 1941 513T has done very well by me in our club's 22 rimfire matches netting me several wins in the "plinking" class with very competitive scores with a best of 399 of 400 with 27X rings with an old wobbly Redfield aperature and standard post front sight. So, I felt it would do well moving it up to sporting class by adding some decent but vintage type optics. I've just added a Hi-Lux Malcolm fixed 20X scope in an attempt to accomplish that goal. Tomorrow, I'll be ringing it out with some tried and true 22 match bullets. I'll post up the results here. It has shot best with Lapua Center X but it shoots just as well with S-K rifle match.   |

Bet next time we see a picture of that rifle it's got some cheek weld duct taped on it.

Bet next time we see a picture of that rifle it's got some cheek weld duct taped on it. Actually, I've since added 3/16" bases to drop the scope to the point that it now has 1/64" clearance under the forward end of the scope. Alignment seems pretty comfortable now. |

And yes, it's an old CMP rifle with the shaved down comb for youthful iron sight shooters.

That is ultra cool. Did you set the bases yourself or were they already cut in the barrel? The barrel was drilled and tapped and the plug screws appeared to have never been removed. They were tough to get out, but no damage was done. At first I used the bases supplied by Hi-Lux with the scope, but they seemed to be unnecessarily too high. I have since replaced those blocks with a set of standard height 3/16" that I purchased from Vintage Gun Scopes. My only concern with the small clearance under the objective lens is that it may not be enough for my 50 and 100 yard adjustments. I'll find out this morning. |

So what kind of groups at 100 yards are we talking about?

I am hoping for sub .5" 5 shot groups at 50 yards and sub 1" at 100 initially. This morning, my best groups were with SK match rifle ammo. My rifle prefers Lapua Center X but I couldn't find my stash of it in my gun room before heading to the range. Conditions today were clear, but with variable winds 3-10 mph. With some trigger work and Center X ammo I could improve on this quite a bit.  |

My '36 vintage 513T has a 15X Unertl in Unertl mounts. The objective clears the barrel by a bit less than 1/8 inch when sighted in at 100 yds, and my cheek is firmly on the "original" comb - no spacer necessary. I can't match Bill's groups, but I've never shot anything better than CCI Std. Vel. |
