On my way down to see one of my sons yesterday I looked out in a friends pasture & yipee, Rock Chucks were running all over the place! A quick phone call got me the ok because he had cows in there but I've never mistaken a Rock Chuck for a cow in a very long time. The shots were going to be fairly close so I grabbed my Buckeye with the 32/20 cylinder in it, topped with a cheap 1X4 scope on top & quickly hammered 4 of them with a 118 gr cast HP. Nasty bullet out of that 32/20, it really rocks their boat. I could only get a photo of one big boy, the other 3 fell in the lava rocks & with the knee replacement recently I'm not taking any chances in those rocks, this hasn't been fun! This Chuck is a real Toad, at about 85 yds. Dick

I’m glad you all are enjoying this safari! The definition of fun is Sixshot and Callshot together enjoying time and providing some entertainment for some of you that don’t get to do that kind of stuff like we do. Dick didn’t mention it but I had some fun scarring the pants off of a squirrel at about 60 yards with my snubbie. When I ran out of my test loads I grabbed my single six for a couple of shots and the squirrel never stood up and flipped us off again. Enjoying another afternoon in the world’s largest playground. No revolvers we’re hurt during this episode.

"graveling a mouse" sorta like "barking a squirrel". Good shootin'.

Callshot was shooting more like 80-85 yds on that Ground Squirrel & although he never hit it with the snubbie I was amazed how close he was coming, he really had that thing dancing. They he broke out the old single six & & think it was his second shot & he nailed it. A ground squirrel at that distance looks like a piece of string, it was some impressive shooting for sure. It always amazes me when he pulls the trigger & one of those squirrels runs down that bullet, they are really fast Dick

So what was "the one time" you mistook a rock chuck for a cow?

Well, again I've never mistaken a cow for a Rock Chuck, or any other animal for that matter but I do remember a funny little similar story of a couple of friends that might be of interest. They lived in another town & worked together/rode together. There normal routine was to take a back road through a valley so that they might see some big game or perhaps a coyote on the way to work, just something to break up the grind of driving the same road every day.
One would drive & the other would ride in the back so they had all the bases covered if they got a shot at something. One morning they were driving through this canyon & the sheep men had brought in a herd of sheep to graze for the summer. One of the guys noticed a Magpie, that's a very common bird out here in the west, maybe about the size of a Pigeon. It was sitting on the back of one of the sheep.
A quick wager was made & the brilliant marksmen stuck his rifle out the window & touched off a winner.... the Magpie was gone. He ask his buddy that was spotting, how was my shot? And his friend said..........bbaaaaaadd! The sheep was gone too!

I went to Soda Springs today to put flowers on Betty’s grave. I ranged the shots mentioned above. They ranged at 74 yards. As with any shots there is an element of luck along with some skill. If you don’t take the shot you never know if you could hit it. I’ve enjoyed sending lead toward targets and I’ve even hit a few and missed more that don’t get mentioned here. So I say to all of us here, “keep shooting and good luck.”

callshot,, you are correct in how if you don't try shooting at longer ranges or harder targets,, you'll never know if you can do it. "keep shooting & good luck!"
And I was just thinking about you & Betty yesterday.

Dang, Six shot, you like to stare danger in the face and taunt it! It's lucky you're a good shot, you might not have survived the encounter. Good shooting, that's a mighty small target
