In the early '80's spent 4 days backpacking on the east side of divide, the Bob. To just south of the china wall. Saw no sign of wolf, i grew up trapping. We did see mulies, elk and mtn goat and grizzley. We've done a loop around the wall both years - starting at Benchmark, crossing the White River Pass, hiking up the White River to Larch Hill pass, then south along the wall. We've seen wolf tracks only on the west side of the divide, but our sample size is tiny. We plan on doing that hike again this year, but are adding in going to the top of Haystack Mountain, which we have cut out both previous years.

Wolves were always a problem, long before the internet. Hence they were driven to near gone. Healthy and balanced, brings joy, but species have always gone away, per climate and habitat changes. it is never pretty. The "MEN" leads me to think I need to re-figure out how to block folks . Bison were driven to near gone. What kind of problem were they? MEN can also have a conversation without crying. Were wolves driven to near extinction because they didnt belong? No, they were competing for mans food sources. That is no longer the case. Now they are competing for mans recreation sources. Im not pro or anti "wolf" and would never place wolf above man, but as is so often the case, things are blown entirely put of proportion. If a wolf came and took your child would you care what anyone thinks or would you take care of your wolf problem? Hunting and gun forums are like "THE VIEW" for men.

The opponents of the wolf are generally sportsmen. What is OUR agenda to get rid of the wolves? Will we then take the bountiful wild resources and feed the multitude? NO! We will sleep better knowing there are more big bucks and bulls to chase than before. When those big bucks and bulls overpopulate and GOD steps in, you will have a winter kill or disease that will then maintain the balance. The balance exists whether we choose to see it or not. If there were big bucks and bulls behind every bush like we all dream, what would it mean then to kill one? When Everyone else has one as big or bigger then it isnt big, it just "is". "Well i hunt for meat" we say. Do we hunt for meat because its cheaper? For most its not cheaper. Even if you process your own meat, hunt on public land, use handed down equipment you didnt have to buy, you still had time invested. That time could have been used to earn money to buy as much or more food than was harvested. "Well i hunt for clean food". Ok, you can also raise your own clean food as cheap or cheaper than hunting. We hunt because its engrained in our DNA to hunt and gather AND WE LIKE IT. If you hate wolves because they are competing for your RECREATIONAL resources than just say so. Is there anyone left who says what they mean and means what they say?
