My father had an uncle that was a prisoner of the Japanese during WW2. He eventually escaped to the jungle where he very nearly died, and was then recaptured. Though he witnessed many executions he did make it home with many health problems that followed him for life.
My own Pop is a Navy Vietnam Veteran. He served as a plane captain on the C1A and then the newer C2A planes when they were transitioned over.
A dear family friend is an Army Vietnam Veteran. Shortly after arriving in the jungles of Vietnam, right out of boot camp he received several gunshot wounds to his legs. Helicopters arrived to transport wounded. He was loaded on one as the first took off, only to be shot down. He was on the 2nd chopper that made it, but the third was also shot down. He is a great man who became a mail carrier and later a local postmaster. A better friend you could not ask for.
