Beyond “laser” I don’t know the process

Laser is totally possible like this youtu.be/-kQ6Nx4Gniw?si=3OPGJ67id-ziqc6wThere are a lot of machine and partial machine processes now. Sometimes they will do a layout and initial work in a milling machine then follow lines and finish depths by hand with a Foredom engraving hammer handpiece. At that price I'm thinking lasers

I have a friend & fellow shooter who has a laser engraver. A lot of his work looks similar to the stuff there.

Owning several pre-war and pre-1900 engraved German and British rifles, that is definitely NOT engraving to me. Anyone familiar with real engraving could spot that fake across a 40 foot room. Laser etched would be more accurate.

I didn't realize lasers were being used as such. If you don't look at it as engraving and order some crazy Smith & Wesson performance center product I could see it working in that aspect pretty quick

A subject I’m exploring……..light engraving on a 12 bore. Hard to choose I have only had one gun engraved and Bobby Tyler made it simple. I told him how much I wanted to spend and just make sure it isn’t gaudy. He had Rocky Sharp do it and it turned out fantastic. It is real engraving and looks beautiful. Search some of my posts for the Clements ROA that I have posted many pictures of (I am kind of proud of it😍)

This one was actually engraved by Michael Gouse I've had a couple done by him... when I had them done, the quality was good, price was very reasonable, & lead times were very good...

The engraving seems pretty deep on these, so I think they look better than any other laser engraved gun I can recall.
Getting that amount of engraving coverage by hand would be spendy, but the upcharge here is pretty modest. I suppose if I wanted that % coverage without breaking the bank there's not really better options.
It's computer perfect so I think it lacks the charm of imperfect hand cut engraving, but we've all seen awful hand cut stuff and this is for sure better.
For this type of engraving, I think detailed portraits make it look cheaper because our brains realize good portrait work is in the realm of a master engraver. It becomes a big red flag that makes us focus on the fact that it's machine work instead of just appreciating the vibe of the piece.
Instead of using dye layouts, I wonder if any engravers are using a laser to outline the pattern then hand cutting over it for the best of both worlds with some economy of the process.
At the very least it's better than Reeder style engraving lol

I was flipping through Michael Gouse's pictures on his site, this morning, & I'm not sure, but several of the animal pictures may have started that way ( laser or somehow super imposing the picture, prior to hand engraving )... but there are several pictures of engraving in process, on his site... this is some design proofs, before the engraving began on my gun... it should be noted, that prior to engraving, Dave Clemments was consulted, on engraving on the cylinder, & by advice, the engraving is shallower on the cylinder, than on the frame of the gun... because the cylinder was bored from 357 to 10mm, so the chamber walls are thinner...

Pattern is confusing. I have 20-25 years of Double Gun Journal to confuse me.
