I am not aware of that one Bula! I’ll try to find it. I looked and only book I see by him is about the day Sasquatch became real to him.

Small whitetail buck, with my 3&3/4" Ruger "Old" Vaquero bird's head grip 45 Colt, 15 yards. Pretty much walked up on him while I was attempting to walk off Christmas dinner back in the 90's.

For me it early 1980’s and was a whitetail doe and a Colt Commander 45acp, 230gr. HydraShok, at about 15-20 yards. At least I think that was the first. My favorites now are Pigs and any revolver whose caliber starts with a 4 or 5.

Looking again at the title,,I forgot to mention I was hunting small game with a handgun many years before I became a dedicated handgun hunter for big game. That,, and I fudged a bit on my forked buck being the first one. It was the first one I was actually hunting & trying for fully legal.
See,, I had been challenged about shooting a deer from my Huey in flight. Now,, it was deer season,, but to use a Army Huey to do so,, well, was bending things a bit.
I had purchased a S&W M-27 with an 8-3/8" barrel from one of my Warrant Officers. That gun had an action job & was SWEET!!!!!!!!!! Boringly accurate too. Well, my big mouth was allowing how good it was & all, and somehow the discussion came up about shooting one from a Huey. (I was a doorgunner BTW!) I said I could do it,, and was promptly bet a case of beer that I couldn't. A "select" group of us were aware of all this. So,, with a select pair of pilots,, and a "training" flight,, we went in search of a suitable deer. I won the bet,, on a fat 6 pt buck. And the deer was the hit of a platoon party a few weeks later,, where the case of beer was delivered. I got a few of the beers,, but I really had bragging rights. So,, while it was a bit of a bending of the way it was killed,, I don't really count it as a true hunting handgun hunt. But it was my first big game animal with a S&W revolver.
And I'm guessing the statute of limitations has passed long ago on that one.

I killed a lot of small game with .22 pistols long before I ever shot anything with a revolver. First revolver kill was a rabbit at about 30 yards with a 6½" pre-29 and 240 gr SWC. First revolver large game was a whitetail buck at about 12 yards off the ground with a 6½" 629 with Ultradot 30. The 629 is my favorite; it just shoots nearly every load into nice small groups.

First with a revolver was a groundhog with Moms RG 2 1/2 in .22 in the tobacco barn. Revolver deer have all been with my .45 Colt Ruger's + rabbits and squirrels.

I was probably about six and my dad who was a county Sheriff let me shoot his Colt Police Positive 22 WRF out of the truck window at a turtle on a log in our fishing pond. The turtle flipped off the log and I swore I hit him, but really he probably just slid off the log. I was hooked anyway. Twenty years later I shot my first spike buck in the shoulder with an 8 3/8" S&W Model 29 with my handloads. I thought it would knock him down, but I had to track him 1/4 mile. I thought I was Davey Crockett when I finally found him.

I really enjoy hunting whitetail deer in December & January with my Freedom Arms. Ironically, my first and most, have been taken with a 357. If I had to pick one caliber, it would probably be 44 Mag.

My first animal taken with a handgun was a porcupine out in the pasture with an Italian 1858 Remington Navy repro when I was 10. It was the first handgun I was allowed to carry and I was hooked after that first quill pig. I shot a ton of small game, porcupines, and even a couple of coyotes with it. Far more effective with roundballs than the numbers would suggest.

Started with squirrels and a 22 Buckmark, lots of fun!! YEARS later I took a coyote with a 44SRH while hog hunting. Moved to the county 11yrs ago and took a deer on my place with a 44spl Flat top. My favorite is to chase hogs with a heavy loaded 45 colt. In the time I have lived in the county, I have taken a few coyotes, a couple deer, handful of squirrels, all with a sixgun.

First animal with a handgun was a squirrel. My first deer with a handgun was a doe with a 6.5 jdj. Several more does and scrub heads followed with a 44 mag encore. Revolver bug bit and a decent 8 point with a 460 S&W. Now its 41 or 44 mag. Got a freedom arms 41 mag but haven't hunted. With it yet. Numerous pigs with the above revolvers and some of my 10mm's.
