If the missing buffing wheel(s) speak volumes, what do would you think if you saw one in another custom gunmaker's shop? Good point I use different ways to do different things. I’ve stoned actions. I flat lap I lap Hone I buff And I spin things to polish. Or grind them. For just such occasions It's interesting to me that S&W and Colt used contoured leather and felt wheels to contour thier frames.

And I would suspect that is a finishing process. And they have to make money. And I do fine detailing on parts. Had to then. Now I do it for myself. On my Britte 12 bore shotgun build…….no buffing wheels at all hardly.
