One of my gun regrets is trading off a Winchester 94 AE Black Shadow 44 magnum like a big dummy.

My first rifle was an 1894 Winchester, so I'm a little biased. I enjoy all 5 of these rifles, but it is important to be aware that they have strengths and weaknesses. -When I am examining a square bolt Marlin (1893 usually) I always check the locking recess in the bolt for battering - it's very common to find damage. -Marlin 1893's almost always have broken stocks, sometimes the damage isn't visible until the stock is pulled - the fingers into the receiver break off. -Winchester 1894's often have cracks forming in the tang at the end of the hammer recess, and when I'm looking to buy one I check the up and down float of the bolt when it's closed. -The cartridge stop in the lever link also wears which creates a double feed situation. -My Marlin 1894 Cowboy in .45 Colt has a terribly oversize chamber. If the current M92/M94 Miroku didn't have the top tang safety, and the weird rifle forend cap, I would own one - I have a current Miroku 1873 deluxe and it is awesome. Since scope are now almost mandatory, I look for pre-Safety Marlins -336A and 336A-DL are my preference. failing that, a pre-cross bolt Win '94 suits me fine too.

leenfield that's interesting your Marlin Cowboy 45Colt has an oversized chamber. Mine, an early one, has a very very tight chamber, whereas my early 94 Trapper 45Colt has a drastically oversized chamber.
The new angle eject Winnies are very easy to scope.

Admittedly much more of a Marlin m1894 fan boy but I did once own a Winchester trapper in .45 Colt. It went down the road only because of the stupidly oversized chamber that USRA insisted was correct! It could have been either set back or simply replaced but I got pissy because of their attitude and I knew that to me it wasn’t worth the hassle and money to correct. It shot great but ruined every single case fired thru it because the expansion was so severe case life expectancy was virtually shoot and toss

The rifle is extremely acccurate. I use to shoot groundhogs with it up to 200 yards.

I bought my Limited way before that and it also was second hand. I know the gunshop was firing hot 45Colts with jacketed and 296 powder.

I had a 16” 44 back in the late 80’s. It was very unpleasant to shoot. Seemed worse to me than a RH 5.5” or a SBH cut down to 4.75”

Yet shooting the same load from my 8 3/8 inch barrel Model 25 Smith is kind of pleasant. Don't like mentioning his name, but Mike Venturino said the same thing about his Trapper.

I had a 84 in 44 Mag, pre-safety.
The last two comments ring a bell for me. I thought it was unpleasant to shoot, compared to the same loads in any of the Super Blackhawks I've owned.
It wasn't so bad that you couldn't stand to shoot it, but not nearly as much fun as the SBHs.

It might be the handgun recoils up and back on your loose hand, where as the rifle kicks your shoulder straight back.
