Well, I've read that John Carey at FA has said it's harder to get a good trigger on a 97 than an 83, but that hasn't been my experience. The standard factory actions on my 3 97's are as good as any of those on my 83's - and I'm pretty demanding on triggers and sights. The 97 does have one idiosyncracy that I've never seen on my assortment of 83's, and that is that on some individual guns, if you cock the hammer a bit too fast and therefore too far when trying to put it in the loading notch, it is possible to lock the gun up. At that point one must lower the hammer and start again. The condition is known and recognized at the factory. My early .32 showed this malady from time to time, and John worked it over when I visited the factory last summer. I don't think it's done it since.
Custom vs FA? Which ever you want. 2 Dogs gave the best answer possible. My personal appetite for customs was mostly satisfied a few years ago, and I'm quite content to buy FA's with individualized touches. I have a couple that I want engraved if anyone knows an accomplished engraver accustomed to working with 17-4 stainless.

My 7.5" 97 41 mag is bone stock (no action job) and the trigger breaks at a hair over 3#. It is amazingly crisp and clean with zero overtravel. I've yet to find a better trigger on any other gun long or short. IMO, it can't be made any better. My 6" 83 44 was a tad heavier, but otherwise clean as well.
Not necessarily referring to the poster on GBO above, but you gotta take anything you see on Graybeard's with a huge grain of salt. Scads of armchair expert know-it-alls over there, led by the biggest one of all.
In the end, don't take my word for it or anyone else's for that matter. Get your hands on one and find out for yourself. You'll be glad you did.

"Get your hands on one....", and when you do, you may find that the 97 size grip is just about "perfect" for many people.

The blue steel boys like to turn their noses up at the stainless FAs... I find that a little duct tape and flat black paint gets my FAs pretty close to where they need to be..

i've been collecting FA articles/brochures for many many years and have lined out what i'd want:
Premier M97 45lc 4.25" shortened to 3.5" fixed rear dovetail front flutes ebony micarta round butt honed action screw kit and 3 extra blades of different heights
(and then have allan harton do his magic on the ejector system so i can remove the cylinder without removing the housing)
ok, i'll have to start saving my pennies to see for myself.

Like this? Whoops, forgot you said fixed sights. Don't forget to add a .45 ACP cyl. Same gun, different pics. Paul

Pretty is as pretty does. The S.S. F.A. are pretty. Being a long term Ruger fan, I'd probably just get one modified. I wouldn't call it custom. Just a modified Ruger. No use putting on airs. steve b

Without ever even haveing handled one, I do have a minor issue with the F.A.'s though. Ya'll are welcome to laugh if ya want to. Why do they give away 1/2" or so of eye relief and mount the rear sight where they do ? The very nice pic of one above also has a very deep front sight blade that also gives up eye relief. I want all the eye relief I can get with a given barrel length. steve b

Need more sight radius? 10 inch barrels are on FAs standard option list... I'd bet that the location of the rear sight on an adjustable sight FA is a little for ease of manufacturing and a lot for protection... The ISGW sight FA puts on the Silhouette versions moves the rear blade to the extreme rear of the gun... FWIW our own Ken O'Neill makes sight blades that will get you a fraction of an inch of that radius back.

is it sight radius or balance of the gun, seems like most of my customs end-up around 5 1/2", I like my 29s at 4" and I'm growing very fond of my sub-nosed x-frame with its 2 3/4" barrel. might want to shoot a 83 once or twice before making up your mind on there sights
