I've done a lot of searching through load data and also first hand experience, and I've found N330 to be a very near equal to Universal and Unique. It burns clean, fills the cases nicely and with other brands going up in price the Vihtavuori powders are no longer prohibitively expensive. Someone was closing out vv340 a couple years ago and I bought all they had. Several jugs of it. Havnt tried any yet but if it’s like 133 in a bench rifle, it’s likely to become a favorite quickly!

I couldn’t find Bullseye for several years so I finally pulled the trigger on trialing VV-N310 for 45 Auto. 4.1G behind a Zero 185 JHP is just as accurate as 4.0G Bullseye behind a 200G LSWC. I couldn’t find Blue Dot for my 10MM so I tested Long Shot and it appears to be more accurate so far. I just picked some WST to try in 38 SPL, a new powder for me. I also picked up some AA5 & VV-N320 for a friend to test in his semi-autos.

Just picked up two 8 lb bottles of H110 for $227 each, out the door so I'm set pretty good for the 327, 41,44 & 45 Colt for a while.

I’d feel plumb naked and in a panic if I only had 16# of magnum handgun powder! You’d think I grew up in the depression the way I stash stuff. Nice score though. I assume that was local since you said OTD?

I found a bunch of Shooter's World Heavy Pistol at a reasonable price as a substitute for #9 and 2400. I've been experimenting with 41 Mag and 357 Mag, it has worked pretty well, though I am still trying to develop loads with different bullets. I found that 12 grains behind a 158 grain Lee bullet was giving me approximately 1180fps with an ES of 32 and a SD of 11 in my Smith 586 Classic (this is probably near top load for this gun). Accuracy was good with this load in my 586, have yet to try it in any of my other 357s. I've also been working up loads in my Smith Model 57 Mountain Gun with Heavy Pistol. I have been working on loads with some Sierra 170 gr JHCs, but as yet haven't found the combo that I like. I have developed a fairly accurate load but the ES and SD are pretty high. I have had more luck with a 215 grain LSWC load and have been slowly increasing the charge weight trying to find a good load. Since Shooter's World doesn't list any loads for 41 Mag (that I have found) I have had to go kind of slow with these. If anyone knows of some published loads or has developed some I would be happy to compare notes. I am using a chrono to test my loads so I have some data. During the drought I also bought a few pounds of Vectan Ba9 as a substitute for Unique. It seems to work OK but haven't had enough time to work it out. When I bought it the price was really good, though I haven't seen it much since. I've used it for some 45 LC loads and light 44 Mag loads. Need to do more work with both, but generally I think they will work out, the 44 Mag loadings particularly show promise, just need time to develop them. Shooters World Heavy Pistol is in fact the old #9 formula. I've used it since it came out in everything from the 32H&R to the 500 Linebaugh. Love the stuff. Current #9 load data is safe to use with it. My favorite 357 mag load is the 358429 from MP crimped in the groove on 13.5gr Heavy Pistol, CCI 500, in Starline brass trimmed to 1.250" so it fits in my OM Blackhawk and Sixes with room to spare. 1375fps from the 6.5" and 2" at 50yds. My go to deer slayer. I also like 9grs under an Arsenal 32-98 Keith in the 32H&R. Great information, thanks. That will make load development much easier.

I have a friend who is a ballistician at one of the major bullet makers. I was almost out of SR-4756 that I use for 16 bore shot shells and, it had been discontinued. Said friend called one day and asked if I had found any SR-4756. I had not. He said they were clearing out their powder magazine and if they couldn't find takers they were using it for lawn fertilizer. He said there was a bit over 3 lbs left in a 4 lb. keg. I asked how much whereupon he replied, "there's a catch, if you take this you have to take almost a full, 4 lb. keg of SR-7625 and the price is you drive up to get it." No one wanted either one, I said yes.
I'd never heard of SR-7625 and after doing some reading on it learned it was a fairly popular handgun powder. It's also accurate and fairly miserly. I now use it in my 32-20's and 45 Colt and it is the equal of Unique plus a little, if you want.. I learned SR-4756 is also a pretty decent revolver powder.

I went looking for 2400, but all they had was 410. I thought that I'd read somewhere that the burn rates were close, so I bought 2#. Now I see that they say to not load it in Metallic cartridges... Guess I'll have to get a 410 reloading press so I can use up the powder I never saw to not use it in metallic cartridges. With cast bullets it is the BOMB in my .30 Carbines. I load it just a bit lighter than 2400.

10+ years ago during that powder shortage I tested a couple of powders for which there was no metallic data. As a result, I now LOVE AL 20/28 and will use it in my .38 and.44 Special's over Unique as it meters better.

When Alliant e3 came out, I don't think there was any metallic data for it. I tried it in .40 and since have burned over 100lbs of it in .40 and 9mm. Still don't think there is data for it.

This is interesting to me. Many years ago I did a little testing, e3 vs. Bullseye and have the better part.of a pound left. I might should try it more.
