Started with a contender in 6.5 jdj in the early 90's . Work and duck hunting took over then rifles and prairie dogs and accuracy. Small stint with 44 encore and back to rifle as hunting on a pipeline the shots are long. Started buying a few performance center guns and some 10mm autos. Have a few single actions just can't shoot them as good as my n frames. Carried the 657 every deer hunting trip this season so far. Plan on working up a load for the Freedom arms 41 and learning to shoot it better before next season. I have too many toys.

IT HAS TAKEN ME A COUPLE OF DAYS TO TRY AND REMEMBER MY DA KILLS. PRETTY DARN SURE I HAVE NEVER USED A SEMI-AUTO ON GAME.
WITH A 6" S&W MODEL 53 JET REVOLVER, WITH A CYLINDER IN EITHER 22 HORNET OR K-HORNET, AND USING THE HORNADY 40gr JET BULLET, I TOOK A MEDIUM HOG.
WITH AN 8 3/8ths" S&W MODEL 53 JET REVOLVER, IN EITHER 22 JET OR 22 SUPER JET, AND USING THE REMINGTON 40gr JET BULLET, I TOOK A NICE 9 POINT BUCK.
WITH MY SS 5.5" REDHAWK (CONVERTED TO 45 COLT FROM 44 MAG BY LINEBAUGH), I HAVE TAKEN: 1) A 5x5 ELK USING EITHER A 300gr OR 325gr GC'ed CAST WFN; 2) AN EXCELLENT SIKA BUCK AT THE YO USING A 300gr XTP BULLET; and 3) A BIG BOAR HOG USING EITHER A 300gr OR 325gr GC'ed CAST WFN.
WITH A SCOPED 10.5" S&W PC 460 REVOLVER, USING CORBON 200gr BARNES BULLET AMMO, I HAVE TAKEN: 1) AN AOUDAD RAM; 2) AT LEAST 1 AXIS BUCK; 3) AT LEAST 1 WHITETAIL BUCK; and 4) SEVERAL EXOTICS (DEER, SHEEP).
DA REVOLVER HUNTING/KILLING HAS PROBABLY ACCOUNTED FOR LESS THAN 3% OF MY HUNTING/KILLING, THE REST BEING DIVIDED AMONG SA REVOLVERS AND CONTENDERS/ENCORES/XP's.

I have used Ruger Mk. II .22 semi autos for many years hunting squirrels. On my first safari to Zimbabwe in 1990, I used a 7-1/2" Ruger Redhawk .44 Magnum on impala and warthog. I also used a different 5-1/2" Redhawk .44 on wild boar in Tennessee. Then, a 5-1/2" Redhawk .41 Magnum was used on an exotic spanish sheep and a wild turkey. Another wild turkey was taken with a 6" Security Six Ruger .357. Later during the '90's, I used a S&W 629 .44 Mag. with all the late '80's - early '90's performance upgrades, to take several deer in Ohio and Texas, javelina, bobcat, fox, and 2 mountain lions in Utah and Idaho.
It slipped my mind earlier, but I also used a S&W Mdl. 64 .38 Special and a Remington-Rand surplus 1911 .45 ACP to take some squirrels many decades ago. Obviously, these were targets of opportunity.
Like 45 Man, most of my big game handgun hunting has been with single action revolvers or Contenders/XP's.

For me,, I've used a semi-auto .22 for small game,, as well as a S&W M17.
But when I decided to get into handgun hunting for deer,, back in the 1980's, I specifically bought a Ruger Redhawk in 44 mag for that purpose. I passed on several deer,, as I wanted the first one to be a "wall hanger" sized buck. And when I did finally did get one in my sights,, I missed, twice. I had removed & replaced the scope often in practice, and it'd never lost zero. Foolishly, I didn't check the scope before season, and when presented an easy 35 yd shot,, I missed, twice. I blame my "youth stupidity" on that, because my scope was way off. My fault. I switched to my T/C Contender & started slaying deer with a passion. I haven't taken a DA handgun afield on purpose to hunt with since. Between my Contender,, and later a couple of SA handguns,, they just haven't been my first choice. Nothing wrong with them,, just my preferences.

The Contenders I've used over the years on Deer over the years... a 14" Hunter barrel in 45-70 ( used this the most ) a 10" 30-30 barrel... this one didn't get bloodied, only used it one year, & missed a 75 yard shot... & my newest... is a customized 10" bull barrel 45 Colt... it has one of the Williams Fiber Optic ghost rings on it, rather than a scope ( and interestingly, it has a reversed twist barrel... it was a factory 45 Super barrel to start with... I don't know if all those had reverse twists, & or why they were twisted in the other direction??? )

I got my LB LS 10MM back from the great folks at NHC just in time to run a few test loads across my Xero and take this huge doe at the end of season. In hindsight, I wish I had field dressed her before hanging her up in the barn. The XTP moving along at 1,310 fps obliterated her lungs at 35 yards broad side. A lot more clean up than expected but I have no complaints about the gun, load or the results. It was over fast and she most definitely didn’t get out of sight. I much prefer the grip of the 1911. Harold- Thoughts on the SRO? I saw a few FA83s wearing them. I recently added an mro to a Bar Stow barreled G40. A cheap HoloSun. Simple but works. Really like it. I would love just a touch larger field of view. The SRO seems to have just that. Thought? I've also taken a handful of WT with the 10mm. Last buck was from a treestand with the 180XTP. Watched steam exit the onside as he hit the dirt and did two circles. I was impressed.

I've taken white tails & muleys with model 29 Smith's & also model 57 Smiths. Elk with both plus, bear & antelope. Elk, deer & moose with Super Redhawks. Mountain Lion with 357 S&W's & also deer. Many deer, elk & antelope with different Contender calibers, also one bear. Small game.... I couldn't even pick a number. One time I shot 180 Ground Squirrels in two days with a Colt Python, using the Keith cast bullet, all were offhand. I've shown photo's many times.

Thought I would join this thread here. Until this past weekend the only thing I have harvested with a handgun has been squirrel taken with my Ruger Single Six. Then this weekend I was able to harvest two Texas Pigs with my Ruger Blackhack Flattop 44 special with 5.5" barrel. Attachments:

jessejaymes It seems that the improved FOV with the SRO is quite noticeable. Most of my FAs are set up with green dot Holosuns now. I’ll have to place my Glen-Del archery target out on the range at 50 yards and compare the two. I’m curious now…

I have long admired your squirrel pursuits and your marksmanship. Now I see you get it done on the big game too!

My hunting double actions are a 6" Security Six, S&W 629 6", Reeder built Redhawk 500 Linebaugh. Looking to start picking up some of the S&W classic line to try soon.

I’ve killed more critters with a 6” gp100 than all others combined. Before I fell out of love with the 357, it’s all I used for everything but small game. Still have a gp100 and probably always will. Killed one hog with a 629-4 I had for a short time. It was a sweetheart and it was a mistake parting with it. I prefer the looks of the single action but there are certainly no flies on a DA. If I was looking for something for teeth and claws protection, it would be a DA.

I have never fired any of my double actions as a double action in a charge. Nor have I fired more than 3 shots.
I'm fine with a single action plus it's faster in recoil recovery for me.
