Colt New Frontier

I think the Colt New Frontier is one pretty revolver.  I think it's prettier then the Ruger Blackhawk. If Colt would have played their cards right and made it from the same steel Ruger did and beefing up the areas that need it, like the cylinder for one, and included the 41 and 44 magnums they would have given Ruger a run for it's money. 

The Colt I think is one of the sleekess looking revolver ever is the 1860 Colt.  

What do you fellows think?

I can’t say what didn’t happen, but I can agree that the New Frontier is one helluva good looking revolver. I can say that Colt would probably never have been able to beat Ruger’s prices, maybe not even close. For many, many years, Ruger was a working man’s gun, and tough as hell, well made and finished. These days, the latter is not so much in evidence.

A book larger than War and Peace can be written on all of the questionable decisions that Colt has made through the years. How they managed the New Frontiers has never made sense, I mean they brought it back out over the last 10 years before being sold to CZ but only a handful ever saw the light of day to the public. I think they are one of the finest single actions I have ever had in my hands, especially the second gen guns.

That said perhaps CZ will get around to producing them again, I don’t know if they have any interest in doing so or not. I’d love to see them come out in quantities that can actually be had.

Time will tell but if you find one you like and can afford it’s probably wise to grab it if you want one.

I feel CZ is going to do good things for Colt. That new Colt rifle is a CZ 600 and CZ makes very good rifles. I will say I don't think CZ carried on the line of Dan Wesson revolvers, but they did with the Dan Wesson 1911. The new Anaconda Colt has is better then the first ones. Time will tell on the Python. The old Python lovers are die hards didn't want to accept the new one. Kind of like you had your car for over 10 years and you're reluctant to trade it in on the new model. Personally I never was a Python fellow. I will tell you my friend and I screwed up at the big Tulsa, OK gunshow back in the early 80's when a table had Python 38 Specials with 8 inch barrels for sale at $230. We almost knocked people down getting to that table and were disappointed they weren't 357 magnums. What fools we were. The guy had a bunch of them too. Live and learn

I sold a 7 1/2 New Frontier in 44 Spl., last spring. I hadn't shot it in.....maybe 20 years.

I agree the 1860 is the most elegant single action ever made. They can shoot also!

I'm glad to see some of you liket the Colt New Frontiers too. Interesting thing about the 1860 Colt. Colt had cylinders split on some of his BG cap n ball revolvers. So for the 1860 he had the cylinder made from Swedish steel. At least that is what I researched. Also the 1860 cylinder chamber is straight, not tapering towards the rear of the chamber. The 1860 holds a lot of powder except for the Dragoons. It was a pretty lethal firearm.

I've always loved the New Frontier Revolvers. This includes both rimfire and centerfire models.

Also agree that books could be written on what Colt could and should have done.

I've got two. A 44 Special/44-40 Convertible. Ditto on a 22 LR/22 Magnum. I wish more were available.

32-20/327 Fed, 38-40/10mm, 41 Magnum and many more thoughts cross my mind.

Maybe Ronnie will chime in and tell us what could be done if built from 4150, etc...

As far as aesthetics at least to my eyes, I think the 5 1/2 inch New Frontier is the best looking single action. To slightly derail thread, I think in world of double action nothing looks better than a 4 inch 29 Smith.

Colt NF 44sp with 7 1/2" barrel is on the bucket list. Love the lines, but never understood how they could make such an aesthetically pleasing firearm and then willingly use fencepost quality wood for grips...same with Browning shotguns...

Have a NMBH 45 Colt with Huntington now getting a NF Buntline barrel and other particulars installed. Close as I'll get for the next few years.

Pacecars, buy that Bowen Colt SAA dual cylinder gun (38-40/41 Colt) and have John Powers install a set of S&W rear sights and you are close!

I too am a great fan of the Colt flattops & New Frontiers. They don't hold the cowboy mystique a SAA does, but for the all-around outdoorsman in a saddle or not, they're the gun for sure.

Always wanted a 4.75 44special in the New Frontier myself. I do have a 5.5 45colt NF & just picked up an acp cylinder for fitting too, but never could find a 4.75 44. That one be a dream gun for me.

Interesting hear what barrel lengths fellows find sleek or eye appealing. For me on the Colt single action I always loved the 4 3/4 barrel thinking how damn cool it looks when the ejector rod housing and barrel are about the same length. Then again I like full stock Mannlicher rifles, again how that wood to the end of the muzzle looks. Anyone else share those same feelings?
