A 375 H&H makes.....soup out of snapping turtles. Never thought of using a rifle to make turtle soup. It was...ummmm....amusing.....remarkable maybe? Anyway, I hit this big snapper with my #1 in 375 H&H and turtle shell pieces fell from the sky for 5 to 10 seconds.

When I first started shooting .50 revolvers someone said "Don't you think that's kind of overkill for deer?" We were still shotgun only then, I said "If shooting them with .72 caliber bullets isn't overkill, how can .50 be?"

As many men that have more experience than me have said: “there as no such thing as too dead”
I haven’t been this excited for a rifle in a long time. The rifle should be on the way, I have the Bushnell 4500 1-4X scope in hand, Alaska Arms QD rings are enroute along with dies, brass and the Decelerator pad. Still need to find some bullets and a mold or two. Just had surgery on my C6 and C7 vertebra so might have to wait a little while to shoot it. That will give me time to drop it off at the gunsmith for installation of the pad. I will wait to decide if I need a recoil reducer in the stock or Magnaporting as someone suggested until after I get to shoot it for a little while

I talked to a friend of mine up north that just loves bigger bore Sharps, #1's, etc. about getting the 405 Winchester I just bought. He brought up his #1 in 450/400. He said when people say the 405 kicks hard he lets them shoot his 450/400. Then they think the 405 is a pussycat.

I have loaded up my Shiloh .50-90 Sharps and .45-110 Sharps (both with black powder) and haven’t found their recoil objectionable but to me black powder recoil is a lot different than smokeless. Don’t get me wrong, a 700 gr bullet at 1200 FPS even with BP will let you know you have fired something. It has been a while since I have fired anything bigger than a .375 H&H Magnum so it might take me a while to get back in the swing

A few decades ago when I bought my Shiloh #1 Sporter in 40-70 I also bought a Lyman, 410655 single cavity mold. There is a pile of good bullet molds out there but I never bought another 40 cal. mold for the Sharps. I have a 260 gr. mold for an 1886 in 40-82 I used to own and another about 275 for a 10.5 Jost & Diehl combination gun but never used them in the Sharps.
Point being, I worked up a load with the Lyman bullet cast from a harder alloy, Lyman #2, and Trail Boss which duplicated the ballistics of my Sharps and black powder. It was almost as accurate as the Sharps load with black powder and that load IS sub 1 inch at 100 yds. Recoil and cost are both minimal. I would let kids shoot that load and they had a smile you couldn't wipe off their face...."I shot a REAL elephant gun!!!!"
Trail Boss is evidently a has been and I couldn't find that bullet cataloged by Lyman. If you could find that mold I bet any other suitable powder that gives about 1200 fps would be a hoot. It's also MORE than adequate for deer, hogs and like sized game. I killed a couple deer with it on our farm before setting up the rifle for target work. Oddly, both were facing me when I shot them. Penetration was complete, in the brisket and out a ham. Both distances were less than 100 yards...probably around 65-75 yards. Heck, Colonel Mayer even mentions buffalo being taken with it with I believe a 370 gr. bullet.

The 450/400 was also a preferred round for tiger back in the glory days of hunting. Bet it would be pretty effective on bear, too.
