Hi, guys.
I am having trouble with my Ruger NM Vaquero that I hope you can help with.
I have taken all of my NM Blackhawks apart and cleaned them up and put them back together with no issues. Now I have a problem. When cocking the revolver with the barrel level to the ground the cylinder will rotate. Point the muzzle up and cock the hammer the cylinder does not rotate even though the hammer can be cocked and released when the trigger is pulled.
I have taken it apart over and over and it keeps doing it. I take another one apart and put it back together and no issues.
What can be causing this?
Thank you,
Steve

The only thing that I can imagine that would cause that is that the hand spring might have fallen out while the grip frame was off...

Hi Steve, A mysterious problem like this must be trying to drive you nuts, but from the way you are proceeding it is clear that you will triumph in the end. And when you do please come back and spread the light. Steady on.

Check that you have the frame's spring and plunger for the pawl installed. Or is it possibly binding in the hole and not engaging the cylinder ratchet? Just a guess from your description of events.

Thank you all for the replies.
I am going to take it apart one more time this weekend and see if we can get it running again.
I would hate to send it to Ruger and it got lost or stolen during shipping because it is one of the stainless steel 4 5/8” .44 Specials. A pretty rare Vaquero.
Updates coming as soon as I can.

Looks like a kinked pawl spring.
I will order a new one from Midway tomorrow.

And of course they are $8.00 each. Not $8.00 for a bag of ten like AR detent springs.

While you have revolver apart, check spring loaded plunger in hammer which actuates CYLINDER LATCH (aka BOLT or STOP). A plunger bent from ham-handed assembly, a kinked or broken PLUNGER SPRING, rust or gradou in the hole, will prevent smooth operation of plunger. David Bradshaw

Mr Bradshaw hit the nail on the head in my opinion. Another firearm, although not even a revolver, are AR's. They have lots of plunger springs that get compressed in two areas, the stock on the unit, and the pistol grip onto the unit. They do the same things if down incorrectly as Mr. Bradshaw just mentioned.

I have kinked the spring. I straightened it the best I can and reversed it so the straight part is rearward.

The springs arrived yesterday. Everything went back together smoothly and the issue has been fixed.
Thank you for the help.
