I have a 3 screw 30 Carine inbound and will need to gather up some dies and components. Always wanted one and when they were inexpensive (relatively speaking) I was broke. Then, suddenly, they seemed to command more than say a .44 mag. Well, I finally found one and need to load for it. Looking for advice on dies and tips on techniques.
What to avoid and what to do for trouble free loads.
Thanks.

Make sure you have the cylinder in your hands when you set the taper crimp up. Has to be just right since the cartridge seats off the case mouth. Too much crimp and the case get too deep in the cylinder to little and the cases may not chamber or the bullet will jump crimp.
Some guys avoid a lot of these headaches and size 32/20 brass in the 30 carbine dies and then trim to length. Then you have a rim on the case and can roll crimp as you like. Never tried it so this is second hand knowledge.

Throats in my NM 30 Carbine are .309". I buy Cast Bullets sized for the various 32s and run them thru my Lee .309" Sizer Die.
The maximum bullet size I can seat in brass is .310" and get loaded ammo to chamber.
All this being said because there's zero chance of crimping the ammo to the point it won't headspace. That is if the taper crimp is applied with the mouth not in a crimping groove.
I've never understood the extreme drama surrounding loading for the 30 Carbine. Yet, it prevails everywhere I read.
It's no different than loading for any of the Auto Pistol Cartridges.

Rimmed 32-20 brass will work in a NM 30 Carbine, but not in an OM.

Remember, almost all printed data centers on making ammo that is for and will cycle a semi-auto rifle. I don't spend too much time looking at it. Like Encore my throats are opened to .309 and I size .313 cast down to fit. My powder configurations share more with 32-20 32 mag and 327 than they do with 30 carb. Some plinking stuff much lower than printed data minimums. Bullet weight and recoil are light enough that a very light taper crimp coupled with good neck tension is more than adequate.

It's always intrigued me how misinformation goes on like light years.
Early reports of excessive noise persists to this day. It was factual when shooting surplus ammo. Today for the handloader, it's a strong cased, rimless 32-20. Loaded the same, it'll perform the same and sound the same.
Mine is the most accurate Blackhawk I've ever owned. It was sent to Clements to be highly perfected. It's one of my finest small bores when loaded with GT 115 grn HPs...

Folks,, re-read the fact he has an OLD MODEL .30 carbine incoming. 32-20 brass won't work in the OM's.
For dies,, I use RCBS.
And as noted,, set-up needs to be dern near perfect due to the slight taper of the case body, as well as it head-spacing off the case mouth. The resizing as well as a correct crimp is needed.
But another thing to consider is how smooth the chambers are then the cylinder. Occasionally, they can be a little "rough" and you get cases sticking causing hard extraction. A gunsmith with a chamber home is recommended for this.

Speer "plinker" bullets. Great groundhog/coyote killers. I guess great if you got them. But I have never been able to find any. I think they have been discontinued for a long time.

If your dies are "carbide" they will make a straight wall cartridge. I believe the old "steel" dies were cut for a taper. Both seem to have a potentional for being stickey. Buy the way , I cannot reload the Agulia 30 carb brass without it sticking worse than all the rest. So I use that for firelapping brass.

Ah! The old "revolver timing" issue.
I've suffered from that affliction on many more revolvers than not.
