If your 480 loads aren't getting the job done with full penetration then you probably need a 475, if it is then........ If your 480 isn't getting enough penetration, then you probably aren't going to get it from the 475 either, provided you are using proper loads. A proper load being a well designed 380-420 grain bullet traveling between 1250- 1350fps. My African load is a 475L 415gr swc at 1320fps. The most accurate load in my Redhawk. Same bullet from the 480 did 1285fs from my son's SRH. Really no difference.

A 480 Ruger is a very capable round, a 475L puts an exclamation point on the 480, for when big things bite and claw. There is a NEW Manufacturer coming out with extremely well made Stretch frames of which I’m thinking I’ll have my new Stainless 500 LINEBAUGH MAXIMUM, and 475 LINEBAUGH MAXIMUM’s by the time we get from white season to green. One will accompany me on the HHI Africa trip too. For a couple of extra large critters. Just a teaser, that I can’t talk about yet….

Lots of possibilities coming up, and I’m getting them made with Stainless Bearskinner Bisley Gripframes installed with some beautiful Turkish walnut. Still able to shoot 480 Ruger, or 475 LINEBAUGH as well

Plus it is a maximum frame instead of the way too long bfr rifle length cylinder. That's just too long for the 460 and 500 that they chambered it in, but it did lead to the Bushwhackers!

I agree, there are times when that extra 100 fps or so is worth the added recoil, maybe big bears or Africa, etc. It's there if you need it & many, many people can handle it. Heck I can handle but I don't want to anymore. I'll leave that to you guys that eat raw meat & gunpowder for breakfast & I'll make the 480 carry the day.

Dick It's still not a powder puff when it comes to recoil on the top end itself.

If you can seat your bullets out to 475 length, you can get full 475 velocities in the 480. Max pressure for the 480 is 48k Max pressure for the 475 is 50k...
Me personally, I like 1250fps and a big bullet.

The biggest problem I have with the .480 Ruger, besides no brass, is the price of the guns. I've never seen a factory Ruger that I thought was worth $1200.
For what they're asking, I'm more likely to cringe a bit, go all in an buy a FA in 475.

You can get a bfr for the same money. It'll eat heavy loads.

Seems like there are several guys here that have taken large game with the 385gr HP, and not recovered the bullet, with 480's. ^^^ wink wink. To me, this means another 100fps will buy you some more range, distance.

Seems like there are several guys here that have taken large game with the 385gr HP, and not recovered the bullet, with 480's. ^^^ wink wink. To me, this means another 100fps will buy you some more range, distance. Everyone is far too focused on the extra 100-150fps you get from the gun with the "lighter" bullets. The biggest advantages of the 475 over the 480 is with the 400gr + bullets. Especially the 415-430gr range. The extra case capacity really makes the difference. When using up to 400gr, the capacity of the 480 is adequate. My favorite 475 bullet for the US hunting is the Arsenal 476-415 swc. With that bullet in trimmed down Starline brass from the same lot, the 480 and full length as 475, there's a 165fps difference between the max loads of AA4100. 1375fps vs 1210. Moving to the 430gr LBT the difference opens more. 1275fps compared to the 1090 from the 480 brass. All from the same bfr. I do plan to get a Ruger 480. But it's wanted for more efficiency with the lower end charges, not worrying about the difference at the top. There's far more black bear to hunt here than there are Hippo.
