I hunted with a .338 win mag, for a few years. Only thing I ever killed with it was a Coyote. It was spectacular! Not sure my body would take the recoil at this point. But I would buy a .338-06 if I found one I liked at a decent price...tj

My Browning 338 has the BOSS on the end, & IMO, it kicks about like a 30-06 ( which I also love the 30-06 round... certainly nothing wrong with that one... )

I have always been intrigued by the .338. I don’t have a need for one but want one. Someday I will get one.
I spent a summer when I was 18 shooting woodchucks with a borrowed Sako .338 Win. A buddy of mine’s father ran a hunting preserve for very wealthy gentleman. We had the run on the place as far as varmint control. So I used A .338 and he used a .300 win BAR. Was a fun summer. Especially shooting someone’s else’s guns and unlimited ammo. Shot a lot of chucks and raccoons with those guns!!

The 338 Winchester is a favorite cartridge. It may not be in today's class of long range cartridges, but plenty good for my uses. As a buddy of mine said after shooting a grizzly with his 338 Winchester, it flat out kills stuff. If I had to choose a do-all cartridge for whitetail size through moose size the 338 Winchester would be my choice. I am a fan of the 225 monolithic and solid shank bullets.

A bit late to the party here, but I could’t agree more with Bradshaw’s assessment of the .338WM being like the offspring of the .45-70 (the father in this equation, I assume) and the 7mm Rem Mag. I just lucked out with a pre64 Winchester Model 70 Alaskan .338WM in great condition for $1700 on GB and consider that to be a steal compared to any others I’ve seen over the last few years. I view this rifle as something to play with and take hunting for elk in the grizzly-filled mountains here in NW Wyoming and figure I can sell it for more later down the road if I fall on hard times or once retirement hits. Happy Sunday, gentlemen, I hope you all are living the good life and shooting straight, or at least shooting
