I most always hold the ladle away from the mould, usually about 5/8"-3/4". I always get fins and seams when I pressure cast (keeping the ladle spout and the mould together), I get better fill out with a bit of freefall than if I just hold the ladle close. For moulds that just won't work with that technique, I will pressure cast.
