Thanks bigbore. I plan on using casull brass not 45 colt. Just want to use it for deer hunting and really don't need the recoil of full house loads to kill a whitetail. I am new to reloading. And could use 45 colt loads but not sure of the affect on the longer 454 brass? As the brass is quite a bit longer. Not sure it would be unsafe but I'm not 100% sure. I don't recommend using 45 colt data with slow powder in the larger capacity 454 brass. Under book loads with slow powder can, has, and will blow up guns. If you are going to use 45 colt data, load to the recommended overall length to match the load.

I sent Tim some data to post. Should make life simpler for those who'll let it...

I just got a FA model 83 field grade with a 7.5 in barrel. I worked up a few loads using hornady 240gr. XTP Mags and IMR 4227. I started 10% below min and went up to min. What would be a good hard cast bullet I can easily.load down to 1000/1200 FPS? Should they be gas checked? and what is a good Hogdon powder to use for this task. Thank you I think using native .454 brass exclusively is a good idea. I've never shot .38 or .44 specials in a magnum pistol, I'm afflicted with demon sloth and have no time to be scrubbing cylinders of crud nor am I inclined to have separate bins of short/long brass, adjust dies or buy a second set for shorter cartridges. I'm not sure from your post whether you cast or not, but as far as bullets go (purchased or home cast) have you considered powder coated bullets?

A#2 is a great fast powder for moderate loads. It was recommended by one of the ballisticions at western powders. He said that it was not position sensitive in a wide range of cartridges. Keep us posted as you progress on your project.
