I actually did chrono that load at 1330 average. I’m going to speed test plain base and gas check bullets, As I have both molds. They strike the same POI, and I don’t think the gas check will make a difference, but I want to use those in a 405 as well, so I’ll keep the GC mold, and probably move on the PB mold.

And there's people who doubt the effectiveness of cast hp's. I used to be one, but I have been leaning towards them more the past few years, especially for deer.
Congratulations on the hunt to both of you.

The GC does seem to help with leading when velocity gets over 1400. I’ve got some 265-270’s LFN/GC and they shoot well from my 414sm, if I were using on an elk, They would be my choice. The non-GC bullets do seem to perform well at less than 1400, regarding leading. My stash of 250gr. LFN PC/HPs will be used in my normal 41’s, the 414 will only see jacketed or GC’d cast. Well done, nice bull.

Great job Mike & to your son as well, I'd say he had an excellent teacher. Nothing like hunting elk with a son, I'm sure he will never forget it, awesome memories buddy!

Congrats on a memorable hunt with your son. Both nice elk. ANY bull taken with a handgun is an accomplishment, especially a .41 mag.

Besides the obvious congratulations, what brand / model rifle is that?

I normally don’t look at rifles, but I know it’s a Stainless Ruger, with the camouflage stock and brake. I do like his scope choice. A Leupold MK5 that had incredibly good glass. Something like a 4x14 power? He is thinking down the road to be able to cleanly take much longer shots
