Many years in the oilfield have not been kind to my wrists. Twenty years ago I shot a lot of 325g LFNGC pills over 24g of H110 out of a SS 5.5” Accusport Bisley in 45 Colt. Never took any game with it. It was a lot for me to handle when I was young and healthy, and certainly about my max for recoil tolerance today (I would personally have to put in a lot of trigger time to be able to put that load on target these days).
For a dedicated deer and Elk hunting load, I’m currently looking at a 44 Special load consisting of the LBT 280 WFN pushed to a little over 1100fps (This load came from a Ross Seyfried article on the Flattop Ruger Bisley in 44 special). I may see if I can work up 1050fps load with AAC-9 or some such powder. Setting up ground blinds and tree stands by water holes is how I’ve been taught to bow hunt for elk, deer, and black bear in Colorado. I’m wanting to try the ground blind/water hole technique with big bore revolvers. Shots where I bow hunt are 20 to 50 yards, max. That 44 special load out of a 5.5” mid-frame Bisley will be plenty for what I hunt. I won’t ever see a Grizzly in the wild except maybe from my car while visiting Yellowstone. I recently bought a Blackhawk in 500 S&W Special. I may end up trying 440 WFN’s at 1000fps. I’m betting they will punch big holes through bull elk at 50 yards if I can put them on target.
My everyday hiking and putzing around 44spl and 45 Colt loads will remain 255 and 280 SWC bullets (respectively) at around 1000 fps. A friend of mine shot a forrest caribou through the nose at 7 yards with the RCBS 45-270SWC. It entered the nose and exited the rump. That’s good enough performance for me.
