I fire-formed some 416 JDJ today and decided to snap a few pictures of the gun: The lower barrel is in 8mm JDJ. Left: fire-formed brass, Right: un-formed 416 with a 400 grain Hornady I know a lot of folks with SSK Contenders, but none that shoot 8mm and 416 JDJ. Just curious....any of you ever work with these rounds? -Lee www.singleactions.com

Lee, I think I'd consider picking up a G2 Contender for that evil stuff... Mike Bellm writes a lot of stuff about stretching the 1st generation frames with the big stuff... I understand that the G2 is built a little heavier than the 1st generation Contenders..

That's a stainless Contender in the photo, not an SSK chromed etched-side earlier version.. All the stainless guns and the blued guns with serial numbers above 125,000 or so will be fine with either cartridge. No need to go to the G-2. I've been shooting a ~95,000 S/N .375 JDJ since 1989. Lee, Alan Brannan from Ohio is the only one I personally know who's using a .416 JDJ. He loves his. Both the 8 MM and .416 JDJ's are seldom seen, like the 9.3 JDJ. I own and regularly shoot 9 of JD's proprietary caliber guns, but I'm sorry I can't help on those 3.

Naturally, JD can comment and help with any questions on the .416 and 8 MM. I suggest you call and talk with him.

What's the recoil like on the 416? Recoil is stiff. Not a lot of muzzle jump, but it does come back hard on the wrist. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I run a 376-06 in an Encore, and a couple of 300 Whispers, but the 8mm and 416 are outside my experience. Thanks for sharing the pictures. Bill

I have a real itch for an 8mm JDJ barrel. I've been shooting a 30-40 Krag Imp. SSK but there are several good bullets that seem as though they would work well at the velocities of the 8mm JDJ. If you get to shooting that barrel I'd be curious as to what you think.

If you get to shooting that barrel I'd be curious as to what you think. It likes 185 grain Noslers BTs. The 220 Sierra Game King also flies good. Shoots flat, hits hard, and is plenty accurate. I know the 309 JDJ is a more logical choice, but my "everything" rifle is an 8mm Rem Mag. As such, I went metric on the second SSK barrel. -Lee www.singleactions.com
