3" is my preferred revolver barrel length for a general purpose 357 DA. Anything over or under, I don't even look at.
That Colt caught my eye too and I've heard nothing but good about them so far. For as much as I'd shoot one, the durability comparison with the GP would be a moot point. The GP became so overbuilt in the name of saving machining costs, that it's just too heavy and bulky for me, but they do seem to be well-loved. If I had a GP though, it'd be trade fodder anyway, so "likes" become a moot point as well - for me.
My dilemma would be an older 3" SP101, or the 3" Colt.
I would not NEED the perceived durability of the Ruger over the Colt, to be realistic and honest.
I would not NEED the really, really nice trigger on the Colt, as I can make an SP101's triggers very good - as good as I need or want.
The modular field-strip feature of the Ruger is really only needed when you first buy the gun and have to work on it, reassemble, try it, disassemble, work on it,try it... After that, how often does one NEED to disassemble a revolver to that level?
The Colt has an extra round of capacity.
The Ruger is significantly lest expensive than the Colt.
I would HOPE that at the price of the Colt that it comes out of the box needing ZERO repairs, corrections or tweaks - a crap-shoot with Ruger. Actually, for the price of a new Ruger, THEY should be "right" right out of the box too, but one never knows.
Since the end of last year, I've been watching for Rossi's new 3", six-shot 357, which retains several features Taurus tossed out. Yes, Taurus makes them, but they're making them to a slightly different standard than their own guns and they cost a tad more, but I've not seen them for sale below retail, so I've waited. Yes, it's likely to be a little over half of what a new SP101 is and a little over a third of what a new Colt is, but I like the S$W features Rossi kept and they DO have nice triggers because of those features. Not crazy about Rossi customer service though, so maybe I will stick with my Charter Arms, 3", 5-shot 357.
I think I just went in a circle.
The Colt looks wonderful though. Given the choice between it and a GP, the Colt would win decisively, based on personal preferences alone.
