I'm hunting on SS but next year once I've been a resident of South Carolina for 180 days my license will only be $9 and free after that. That's excellent after paying way high fees as an NR since 1980 to hunt my family land.

I'm trying to take a deer this year with a 30/30 levergun. Never done that.

30-30 lever gun for deer. What's not to like about that?! To me the sixgun is a tool of opportunity. I have however used it for hunting. My largest whitetail buck was taken in Montana with a short Blackhawk 45. I've taken varmints, snakes, hogs & other things like crows & hawks with the sixgun but in the big scheme of things I'm not a handgun only guy. Mr. Keith stirred in me an interest for about everything that burns powder & that hasn't changed. I've spent hours shooting smallbore silhouettes, both revolver & rifle. Same the centerfire revolver & rifle. I did a few years of IBS long-range rifle, mostly 1000 yard stuff. Shot county matches with my sixguns & a host of other things. I'm not into shotguns much but handguns & rifles I love. That said, I have all the respect in the world for those who choose one platform & stick with it.

The only two revolver cartridges I shoot that I don't have a lever gun for are the 32H&R and the 500 Linebaugh.
Both are on the list pending some saving up. Especially for the Linebaugh. Those are stupid expensive.
As for rifle cartridges there's a few 30-30's,35's,444,45-70,and a 50-110 in the old styles. 22HP,22-250,250-3000,300,243,and a 308 in the 99's.
By comparison I own only 3 bolt actions, 22H,6.5×55,416 Rigby.

Lynn.... Hawks, I got a kick out of that, must have been a long time ago. I remember one time, I think it was 1959 & we were fishing along Birch creek & my older brother spotted a large hawk sitting in a tall bush & whacked it with his 22 rifle. As always I was the bird dog! I took off running out there & when I got there I wasn't sure which bush it was, I looked around & finally found it, laying on it's back with both feet sticking straight up at me with those talons wide open. It was just waiting for me to reach down & grab it. I took a stick & it grabbed that instead, yikes! that thing would have sunk those talons clear through my hands. I went back to my brothers 49 Ford & let him finish it off.

Well Dick that would have hurt. One of the best shots I've made was on a hawk at 110 steps with my M-17 Smith. It was a body aim but I hit him in the head.
