Seminolewind, most times when I'm shooting Rock Chucks I'm on the 4 wheeler because some of these Lava reefs are several miles long. What I do is take a piece of counter top cut out from a kitchen sink that I buy from a place that sells them & I place that on that back of my 4 wheeler, that's my shooting table. You can bolt them down or tie them down with bungy cords, etc. Then I take my sand bags & throw them on top and use a small flat bag on the bottom for the pistol grip & I sit on a milk crate or a small stool & I'm set up to shoot Chucks at long range. I gave one of these counter tops to Bob Baker & witnessed him take a Chuck at over 600 yds with one of his FA single shot pistols, he can shoot! I can hide behind the 4 wheeler & I take a little cooler for drinks because many times I'm gone most of the day & cover several miles. When I turn this little piece of laminated wood, which is made by a good friend of mine it makes for a wide forend, much like a bench rest stock & it's super steady! I usually have 2-3 sandbags in front & one in the back, depending on the angle of the shot. You want the sandbags about 3/4 full or they end up round, you want them to lay flat, that way you can put you gun up there with your little "rest" turned sideways & be super steady. I always wear an elbow pad on my right elbow, that way the recoil doesn't drive your elbow into the metal rack or something hard on the back of the machine. Trust me, after a few shots it gets your attention. With this kind of set up you can be rock solid & comfortable for hours. When the shooting slows down I just hop on & move a mile or so & reset. I've been using one of these for 30 years. Dick

Thanks Dick, I appreciate the detailed response. I’ll try to make one and give it a go. I like the idea of a portable bench on a 4 wheeler.

Quite a few years ago a friend of mine had one of those potato diggers going, only it was a bigger, newer model with the rock picker attached & he was out working one of his many fields. As usual he was late getting home & the family didn't think anything of it until it was way past dark. Then they went looking for him, he was a mess, one of his arms was almost torn off from the rock picker & he was still in it. I don't remember the details but I do remember that he was never the same, he was a tough son of a gun but it really took it's toll on him. He just died about 6 months ago after living with it for probably 20 years or so, it had to be terrible laying out in the field for hours caught in that thing. RIP Richard Gilbert!

Farm machinery can be dangerous for sure. In fact,, I heard somewhere about how high the accident rate was for farmers. Not a good thing for sure. All the ones I know,, can regale you with stories of things that happened to them, or someone they know. And yes,, many is the farmer who is of the "tough breed." I fully respect their work.

Sorry I missed that hunt, but I was on the Northern end of Idaho for meetIngs. I’ll have to bring the Encore and get a few shots off. Surgery is Friday so won’t be there for a while after that.

That picture of that farm implement shows a clear case of over maintenance
