A 5 shot 357 limited to 38 Special? No that would keep the fire breathing 357 cartridges at home. Make no sense to me.. but I'm thinking I need to add it to my "set"

Gee.... it looks like a 38-44 candidate.

When the SP101 first came out, it was in 38 special. Next they went with a 357 but limited it to 125gn bullets because of cylinder length...

Those are a little bit collectable.

Those are a little bit collectable. Weren’t there limited runs of those for a couple different pseudo-law enforcement agencies? Foreign market? Kind of like the French railway contract guns?

My SP-101 in .38 special is my every day carry gun. Rides in an AIWB offset clip horsehide holster. Coupled with a thick belt, it suits me just fine. Almost have reached the point where I'm not really aware of it.

I acquired this one off the Ruger forum, (~2006) the reason I signed up. It was well used & full of lead, but the price was right. It cleaned up perfectly and was one of my favorites ,,, until it didn’t come home from my sons house. 😳 He has really enjoyed it. Friend recently left his 3” 357 to me. I like it too, but that original 38 special is slick.

I bought one of the 38 Special SPs years ago and being the dweeb I am I sent it of to Alan Harton and it came home with S&W J frame adjustable sights, semi bobbed hammer and slicked up action. It was my EDC for quite some time until I switched to a Kahr 9. Wish I still had it but the young man I sold it to says it can’t be pried from his belt.

Yes,, I do believe some of those .38's were made especially for foreign contracts. Foreign marked examples are sought after by collectors.

No, not all. The original SP 101's were all made in .38 Special. They are tough enough for very stiff .38 loads. I bought a 3" and later a nominal 2" version, when they were first introduced in the very late '80's. Still today, one is a "truck gun", the other a superb EDC. As lar4570 stated above, Ruger later introduced a .357 version, marked / limited to 125 gr. bullets, and finally in full fledged.357. The .38 was dropped, then later re-introduced for various runs, as I understand. Both of mine were later gussied up by Gordon Logan. Fast D/A recovery of .357 and very heavily loaded .38's can be slowed; D/A 158's @ 900 fps make me happy, warm and fuzzy. My two will never be for sale in my lifetime.

Ken is correct.
When first introduced,, Ruger did only offer the SP-101 in .38 Spl only. But,, due to the switch over to .357 mag, and desirability, the .38's do command a little premium to collectors. Especially the foreign marked ones.

My friend bought one of the SP 101s when they first came out. His had green inserts in the grips. I remember Massad Ayoob calling them "Pocket Rockets."
