Even with 4 feet of snow in many places the Ground Squirrels decided enough is enough, they have to eat! Even if it's a snow cone I guess because today me & my oldest son went for a drive & spotted lots of them that had burrowed up through the snow in search of food, they were starving. Usually by now our snow is gone but this has been a crazy year, we are weeks behind, some of our famers won't even plant some of their fields. And we will lose almost all of last years fawns, most are already dead. There were Squirrels running everywhere, I think we got 17, me shooting my 32/20 Buckeye & Shane shooting a very, very old Savage octagon barreled 22 RF. You can see from the snow they are laying on that the snow is still very deep. It's going to be quite a while yet before this ground is bare. In the second photo it's at least 20 miles to those far mountains. I'm shooting a 118 gr cast HP, pops them pretty good, this was 3 of mine. Too deep & crusted to retrieve any more! Dick

Hard to believe y’all still have that kinda snow on the ground and that cold weather. The water was a bit cooler than I would like but I went swimming with my son today and your photo just took me off guard.

While we didn't have any snow there when I was out there shooting those pesky ground squirrels,, I can say it was FUN!!!! Kinda wild to see them out in such numbers in deeper snow like that. But, it looks like you & Shane had a great day!

Dick, Clear or cloudy, your Idaho ground squirrels are a blast to take with handgun. You and Steve got me into .32 caliber revolvers cause of those little buggers. Wish I was there

James, if you would have been here we would have went earlier & stayed later, there were lots of targets! I was wishing I would have grabbed one of the iron sighted guns but we were in a hurry because of time. Most times we could see 3-5 at the same time, it was fun! I would have probably had to hold them down with my foot so Callshot could have hit one, he's not up to those long range shots very much Did see him hit a Rock Chuck once at abought 40 yds though, old, crippled up one probably. Dick, them jokers seemed to have been hungry enough to eat lead - just couldn't digest it very well.

Wish I was there " My thoughts exactly James. We did have fun on that trip. I do recall that old rancher stopping buy while we were out. On that trip, I took my first kills with a Ruger Hawkeye handgun. And, between it & the Single-Seven .327,, those little buggers didn't care for us "visitors" out there. (But the badger got lucky on me!)

You better be careful holding the squirrels down, because you say I can’t shoot straight since you bent the barrel on my gun, you may get your foot mistaken for a squirrel. Sorry.

I missed a Badger today, he was fairly close too & right in the open on top of the snow, everything is on top of the snow! All I had was my carry gun, 9mm S&W M&P. I forgot it was loaded with 140 gr cast so it was shooting a bit high & I ran the first 2 over the top of him at about 20 yds or so. Then he took off & I couldn't get him to stop. Couldn't get Shane to stop laughing either! Anyway, I didn't get him & he was a dandy, I think he had just came out of the den hole. We were taking a coyote to the taxidermist that one of the grandson's had shot with Shane's 300 RUM at 485 yds a couple of days ago. Two days before Caleb got this coyote Shane got one at 488 yds but he was too lazy to break through the crusted snow to retrieve it & didn't have Caleb with him! On the way back from the taxidermists place, who happens to live a long way out of town, we seen this guy coming towards us, at least we could see the team of horses, the guy was up on top sound asleep! We stopped & talked to him & he said that EVERY day, all winter he would hitch up that team & haul hay from his ranch 4 1/4 miles each way to feed his cows, yikes! They get more winter than we do & we have still got 7 foot drifts in some places. The last photo is a bulldozer trying to get a road cleared out, he's got a long way to go. The guy told us he would sleep until the horses stopped, they knew where to turn on the roads they had been there so many times! Dick

Good to know I'm not the only one who's missed a badger! Nice looking yote there. The distances over snow,, and very likely wind makes the shots at almost 500 yds HARD! I had to chuckle about the guy hauling hay. Fun stuff there.

"Squirrels in the Snow", has a ring to it. Like Out of Africa, or Gorillas in the Mist ! I like the cast of Squirrels in the Snow better though. Down to earth folks.
